The solubility of organic compounds is a topic of great importance in chemistry and of interest in several areas, such as materials, drugs and the environment. In this paper, the solubility of these species is discussed in terms of their properties, such as the predominant type of chemical bond, molecular structure, polarity and types of intermolecular interactions. Examples of biological processes fundamental ...
Coal, natural gas and petroleum-based liquid fuels are still the most widely used energy sources in modern society. The current scenario contrasts with the foreseen shortage of petroleum that was spread out in the beginning of the XXI century, when the concept of "energy security" emerged as an urgent agenda to ensure a good balance between energy supply and demand. Much beyond protecting refineries and oil duc...
The solubility of sulfides is discussed in this article based on the factors that can influence this property, such as predominant type of chemical bonds and structures formed in many compounds. For soluble sulfides, considerations are made on the thermodynamic parameters and the acid-base equilibrium, since the sulfide anion is extensively hydrolyzed in aqueous solutions. On the other hand, for the insoluble s...
The validation of analytical methods is an important step in quality control. The main objective of this study is to propose an HPLC experiment to verify the parameters of validation of chromatographic methods, based on green chemistry principles, which can be used in experimental courses of chemistry and related areas.
In this work a new experiment using HPLC is proposed in order to explore the role of acidity and the organic modifiers in the determination of methylxanthines in tea and coffee. Multivariate and univariate optimizations of the experimental conditions were used.
The solubility rules presented in the majority of introductory texts of chemistry usually do not comprise a systematic analysis of the dissolution processes, neither from a microscopic nor from a macroscopic point of view. The solubility of nitrates in aqueous solution is discussed in this article, focusing on the thermodynamic data and the properties of the nitrate ion.
The oxidation process of sulfur(IV) species by oxygen, ozone and nitrogen oxides, catalysed by trace metal ions, can play an important role in atmospheric chemistry processes like acid rain, visibility degradation and health hazard. An overview of the more relevant investigations on emissions sources, aqueous phase conversion process and environmental impact is presented.
In the last three decades carbonyl compounds, aldehydes and ketones, have received a great deal of attention due to their strong influence on photochemical smog formation and their recognized adverse human health effects. Carbonyl compounds are directly emitted into the atmosphere by combustion sources and also produced from photochemical oxidation of hydrocarbons and other organic compounds. In this paper it i...
