Characterisation of bioactive protein-bound polysaccharides from Amanita ponder...

Salvador, Cátia; Martins, M R; Arteiro, J M; Caldeira, A T

The aim of this study was to evaluate the production of protein-polysaccharide complexes obtained from A. ponderosa cultures using a new microanalytical approach to monitoring quickly and easily the production process.

Molecular evaluation of some Amanita ponderosa and fungal strains living in ass...

Amanita ponderosa are wild edible mushrooms that grow only in some microclimates, particularly those in the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Due to the vast diversity of mushrooms in nature, as well as nutrient variability, which is highly dependent on soil type and environmental conditions, it is essential to be able to characterize fungal microbiota that lives in association with mushrooms and to d...

Protein–polysaccharides of Trametes versicolor: production

Arteiro, J M; Martins, M R; Salvador, Cátia; Candeias, M F; Karmali, A; Caldeira, A Teresa

Abstract Extracellular- (E-PPS) and intracellular-protein– polysaccharides (I-PPS) complexes were produced by Trametes versicolor in submerged cultures with different carbon sources. The highest extracellular-(EPS) and intracellular- polysaccharide (IPS) concentration in the complexes was obtained with tomato pomace culture. DPPH radical scavenging for E-PPS and I-PPS produced by liter of culture was equivallen...

Characterization and Biological Activities of Protein-Bound Polysaccharides Pro...

Salvador, Cátia; Martins, M R; Candeias, M F; Karmali, A; Arteiro, J M; Caldeira, A T

Abstract: Several species of mushrooms, as Pleurotus ostreatus, have been valued as edible and medicinal resources. These mushrooms may be an important source of polysaccharides with medicinal properties as antioxidant, antitumoral, antimicrobial and immunological properties. The aim of this work was to produce and to evaluate the biological properties of protein-bound polysaccharide complexes, extra intracellu...

Pleurotus ostreatus in the biological treatment of olive oil mill wastes

Antunes, D; Pereira, A; Caldeira, A Teresa; Marques sa Silva, J R; Arteiro, J M

Olive oil mill wastes (OMW) constitute an important environmental problem due to the large amount of phenolic compounds and the high toxicity they present. The aim of this work was to characterize the OMW and to develop a biological treatment that promotes a new approach of OMW management. P. ostreatus cultures performed with OMW showed a fungal biomass enhancement as well as medium clarification. A 50%-74% tot...

MSP-PCR and RAPD Molecular Biomarkers to characterize Amanita ponderosa mushrooms

Caldeira, A Teresa; Salvador, Cátia; Pinto, F; Arteiro, J M; Martins, M R

Abstract - Amanita ponderosa is a specie of wild edible mushrooms growing spontaneously in some Mediterranean microclimates, namely in Alentejo and Andaluzia, in the Iberian Peninsula. The nutritional values of these fungi make them highly exportable. Due to the wide diversity of mushrooms in nature, it is essential to differentiate and to identify the various edible species. RAPD markers have been used as a va...

Environmental dynamics of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CCMI1051 antifungal activi...

Caldeira, A Teresa; Savluchinske-Feio, S; Arteiro, J M; Coelho, A M; Roseiro, J C

Abstract Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental conditions on the antifungal activity of the Bacillus sp. CCMI 1053 cultures. Methods and Results: The electrospray ionization mass spectra (ESI-MS) analysis was used to detect the active peptides produced by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CCMI 1051 cultures in a glucose-containing medium to which four different nitrogen sources wer...

Actividade biológica de complexos proteína-polissacárido produzidos em culturas...

Caldeira, A T; Martins, M R; Candeias, MF; Salvador, Cátia; Heber, M; Semedo, C; Karmali, A; Arteiro, J M

Molecular biomarkers and inorganic profile to characterize Amanita ponderosa mu...

Martins, M R; Salvador, Cátia; Arteiro, J M; Caldeira, A T

Amanita ponderosa are wild mushroom eatable, very appreciated in gastronomy, with high exportation potential, that grow spontaneously in some microclimates, particularly in Alentejo and Andalusia. Due to the symbiotic relation, mushrooms can accumulate high concentrations of some metals, consequently is important to estimate the trace metal contents to assessing exposure risks. Although some species of genera A...

Antimicrobial activity of steady state cultures of Bacillus sp CCMI 1051 agains...

Caldeira, A Teresa; Savluchinske-Feio, S; Arteiro, J M; Roseiro, J C

The effect of changing dilution rate (D) on Bacillus sp. CCMI 1051 at dilution rates between 0.1 and 0.55 h−1 in a glucose-limited medium was studied. Biomass values varied between 0.88 and 1.1 g L−1 at D values of 0.15–0.35 h−1. Maximal biomass productivity was found to be 0.39 g L−1 h−1, obtained at D= 0.35 h−1 and corresponding to a 54.4% conversion of the carbon into cell mass. The highest rate of glucose c...
