Background: Sjogren's disease (SjD) systemic affection is being increasingly recognized. The prevalence of peripheral (PNS) and central (CNS) nervous system involvement in SjD and risk factors for these manifestations have not been clearly established. Objectives: To define the clinical characteristics of SjD patients with CNS and/or PNS involvement and to find predictors of this involvement.
Aims: Sjögren's disease (SjD) is a complex disease with a wide variety of manifestations and outcomes. We recently created PORTRESS, the Portuguese SjD registry within Reuma.pt. We aim to describe this registry and characterize our national cohort. Methods: We included patients with a clinical diagnosis of SjD, registered in PORTRESS up to November 2023. Demographic, clinical, treatment, and patient-reported ou...
Objectives: Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are a group of rare disorders that can affect the heart. This work aimed to find predictors of cardiac involvement in IIM. Methods: Multicenter, open cohort study, including patients registered in the IIM module of the Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register (Reuma.pt/Myositis) until January 2022. Patients without cardiac involvement information were excluded....
Objective: To identify risk factors for SARS-CoV-2 infection and for severe/critical COVID-19, and to assess the humoral response after COVID-19 in these patients. Methods: Nationwide study of adult patients with inflammatory RMDs prospectively followed in the Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Register-Reuma.pt-during the first 6 months of the pandemic. We compared patients with COVID-19 with those who did not deve...
Purpose of review: In recent years, the spectrum of neurological manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) has been growing. We provide a critical review of the literature with special emphasis on presentation, proposed mechanisms of disease, and treatment of neurological involvement in APS. Recent findings: Although stroke is the most common cause of neurological manifestations in patients with APS, ot...
Vitamin D is a fundamental regulator of host defences by activating genes related to innate and adaptive immunity. Previous research shows a correlation between the levels of vitamin D in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 and the degree of disease severity. This work investigates the impact of the genetic background related to vitamin D pathways on COVID-19 severity. For the first time, the Portuguese populatio...
