Comparative study of Ruditapes philippinarum and Ruditapes decussatus in Ria de...

Manuel da Silva Rodrigues Maia, Francisco; Gaspar, Miguel; Barroso, Carlos M.

Research on the biological traits of commercial bivalves is essential for developing effective management strategies and ensuring their sustainable exploitation. This study offers a comparative analysis of the invasive Manila clam R. philippinarum and the native grooved carpet clam R. decussatus in the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal, focusing on shell morphometry, growth, reproductive cycle, condition index, and lengt...

Growth, reproduction, and size at first maturity of the peppery furrow shell Sc...

Maia, Francisco; Gaspar, Miguel; Barroso, Carlos M.

The peppery furrow shell Scrobicularia plana is a commercial valuable bivalve in the east Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. To ensure the sustainability of this resource and implement efficient management strategies, it is essential to understand the life history traits of the species, such as growth, reproduction, and size at first maturity. These features were investigated in the southern range of the species' ...

Maia, Francisco; Barroso, Carlos M.; Gaspar, Miguel B.

This study reports the reproductive cycle, condition index, size at first maturity, growth and the morphometric relationships of the common cockle Cerastoderma edule in Ria de Aveiro (NW Portugal), fundamental knowledge in fisheries management planning and ecosystem conservation. The reproductive cycle was monitored for a period of two years, from January 2013 to December 2014. Spawning extended from June to Oc...

Meat yield of Bolinus brandaris (Gastropoda: Muricidae): comparative assessment...

Vasconcelos, Paulo; Barroso, Carlos M.; Gaspar, Miguel B.

The present study assessed the influence of sex, size and reproductive status on the meat yield (soft tissues proportion) of the purple dye murex (Bolinus brandaris) from the Ria Formosa lagoon (southern Portugal). During one year of monthly sampling (October 2008-September 2009), average meat yield of B. brandaris was 40.5 +/- 6.1% (range: 25.8-56.1% wet weight), with no significant differences between sexes. ...

Efeitos do TBT em células vasculares: estado da arte e trabalho futuro

Barros, Ana R.; Feiteiro, Joana; Cairrão, Elisa; Verde, Ignacio; Barroso, Carlos M.; Sousa, Ana C. A.

Morphometric relationships and relative growth of Hexaplex trunculus and Bolinu...

Vasconcelos, Paulo; Barroso, Carlos M.; Gaspar, Miguel

The present study reports morphometric relationships and discusses the relative growth in the banded murex (Hexaplex trunculus) and the purple dye murex (Bolinus brandaris) from the Ria Formosa lagoon (southern Portugal). A total of 11 morphometric parameters (eight linear variables: shell length, shell width, total aperture length, aperture length, aperture width, spire length, spire width and siphonal canal l...

Detection of periodic Sr Ca-1 cycles along gastropod statoliths allows the accu...

Gastropods retain less obvious periodic growth marks on calcified structures than individuals in other groups (e.g. bivalves, cephalopods, fish), a fact that has hampered age estimation in this Class. Nevertheless, a model of age estimation for the gastropod Nassarius reticulatus is possible based on the annual growth rings deposited in statoliths during the winter. These spherical aragonitic carbonate structur...

Morphological expression and histological analysis of imposex in Gemophos viver...

Lopes-dos-Santos, Ruy M. A.; Almeida, Corrine; Pereira, Maria de Lourdes; Barroso, Carlos M.; Galante-Oliveira, Susana

We describe the reproductive system and morphological expression of imposex in the marine gastropod Gemophos viverratus (Kiener, 1834) for the first time. This species can be used as a bioindicator of tributyltin (TBT) pollution on the west coast of Africa, a region for which there is a lack of information regarding levels and impacts of TBT pollution. Adult G. viverratus were collected between August 2012 and ...
