The bone marrow-mediated protection of myeloproliferative neoplastic cells to V...

Cardoso, Bruno A.; Belo, Hélio; Barata, João T.; Almeida, António M.

The classical BCR-ABL-negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) are a group of heterogeneous haematological diseases characterized by constitutive JAK-STAT pathway activation. Targeted therapy with Ruxolitinib, a JAK1/2-specific inhibitor, achieves symptomatic improvement but does not eliminate the neoplastic clone. Similar effects are seen with histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi), albeit with poorer toler...

Oomycetes from the genus Phytophthora are fungus-like plant pathogens that are devastating for agriculture and natural ecosystems. They are able to secrete a glucanase inhibitor protein (GIP) that inhibits the activity of endoglucanases (EGases) involved in defense responses against infection. One of the most widely distributed and aggressive Phytophthora species, with more than 1,000 host plants is P. cinnamom...

Oomycetes from the genus Phytophthora are fungus-like plant pathogens that are devastating for agriculture and natural ecosystems. Due to their particular physiological characteristics, no efficient treatments against diseases caused by these microorganisms are presently available. To develop such treatments, it appears essential to dissect the molecular mechanisms that determine the interaction between Phytoph...

Isolation and analysis of lip2 gene from Trichoderma harzianum

Vaz, Madalena; Belo, Hélio; Jorge, Lurdes; Gonzalez, Francisco J.; Monte, Enrique; Choupina, Altino

Trichodorma spp. covers a group of fungi extremely common in soils of all climatic areas. These fungi arc efficient enzyme producers, with industrial applications, or in nature, involved in the degradation of the coli wall of the phytopathogens as well as in the degradation of other fungi, organic matter and nutrients secreted by roots.

Isolation and analysis of lip2 gene from Trichoderma harzianum

Vaz, Madalena; Belo, Hélio; Jorge, Lurdes; Gonzalez, Francisco J.; Monte, Enrique; Choupina, Altino

The genus Trichoderma is cosmopolitan in soils, wood decomposition and plant material. Species of Trichoderma are often dominant components of the soil microflora in various habitats. This is due to different metabolic capacity of the Trichoderma species and its aggressive competitiveness in nature. The genus Trichoderma are frequently used in biological control because of its antagonist ability of phytopathoge...

Expression analysis by RT-PCR of GIP gene from Phytophthora cinnamomi

Belo, Hélio; Martins, Fátima; Jorge, Lurdes; Sousa, Maria João; Rodrigues, Luciano; Choupina, Altino

Species of the genus Phytophthora secrete glucanase inhibitor proteins (GIPs) to inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in plant defense responses, including during plant infection process of Castanea sativa Mill by Phytophthora cinnamomi. GIPs show structural homology to the chymotrypsin class of serine proteases (SP) but lack proteolytic activity due to the absence of an intact catalytic triad and, thus, be...

The oomycetes form a phylogenetically distinct group of eukaryotic microorganisms that includes some of the most notorious pathogens of plants. Among these, members of the genus Phytophthora cause enormous economic losses on crop species as well as environmental damage in natural ecosystems. Phytophthora cinnamomi is the most widely distributed Phytophthora species, with nearly 1000 host species.
