Recurrence, Microevolution, and Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Legionella pneumophi...

Manageiro, Vera; Borges, Vítor; Rodrigues, Raquel; Bettencourt, Célia; Silva, Cecília; Gomes, João Paulo; Gonçalves, Paulo

We investigated molecular evolution and spatiotemporal dynamics of atypical Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 sequence type 1905 and determined its long-term persistence and linkage to human disease in dispersed locations, far beyond the large 2014 outbreak epicenter in Portugal. Our finding highlights the need for public health interventions to prevent further disease spread.

An Overview of Monkeypox Virus Detection in Different Clinical Samples and Anal...

Cordeiro, Rita; Pelerito, Ana; de Carvalho, Isabel Lopes; Lopo, Sílvia; Neves, Raquel; Rocha, Raquel; Palminha, Paula; Verdasca, Nuno

Mpox is a zoonotic disease caused by the Monkeypox virus (MPXV), and since May 2022, tens of thousands of cases have been reported in non-endemic countries. We aimed to evaluate the suitability of different sample types for mpox diagnostic and assess the temporal dynamics of viral load. We evaluated 1914 samples from 953 laboratory-confirmed cases. The positivity rate was higher for lesion (91.3%) and rectal sw...

Epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease in Portugal from 2012 to 2022

Bettencourt, Célia; Nunes, Alexandra; VigLab-DM – Network for the Laboratory Surveillance of Meningococcal Disease; Simões, Maria João

Backroud and aim: Surveillance of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is essential to monitor changes in the epidemiology of the disease and for more effective infection control. In Portugal, a surveillance system based on mandatory clinical and laboratory notifications was implemented in late 2002, with the laboratory component under the responsibility of the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for Neisseria ...

Epidemiology and genetic diversity of invasive Neisseria meningitidis strains c...

Bettencourt, Célia; Nunes, Alexandra; Nogueira, Paulo; Duarte, Sílvia; Silva, Catarina; Gomes, João Paulo; Simões, Maria João

Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) continues to be a public health problem due to its epidemic potential, affecting mostly children. We aimed to present a detailed description of the epidemiology of IMD in Portugal, including insights into the genetic diversity of Neisseria meningitidis strains. Epidemiological analysis included data from the Portuguese National Reference Laboratory of Neisseria meningitidis ...

Genetic dynamics of invasive Neisseria meningitidis strains in Portugal

Bettencourt, Célia

Neisseria meningitidis is a strictly human bacteria, often present in the human nasopharyngeal microbiota that occasionally cause life-threatening infections, including fatal sepsis and meningitis. Despite the availability of effective antibiotics, meningococcal disease continues to be a public health problem due to its epidemic potential, affecting mostly children. The epidemiology of invasive meningococcal di...

Genomic-based coverage prediction for MenB vaccines on Portuguese invasive Neis...

Bettencourt, Célia; Simões, Maria João

Neisseria meningitidis is a commensal bacteria of the human nasopharynx that occasionally cause serious invasive infections including fatal sepsis and meningitis. Meningococci are classified into 12 serogroups based on structural differences in capsular polysaccharide, but only six serogroups (A, B, C, W, Y, and more recently X) are the most frequent causes of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) worldwide. Por...

Genomic surveillance of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W in Portugal from 200...

Bettencourt, Célia; Nunes, Alexandra; Gomes, João Paulo; Simões, Maria João

In recent years, a change in the epidemiology of meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup W (MenW) has been observed worldwide, with the emergence of new sublineages associated with a higher rate of fatal cases. The present study intends to describe the epidemiology of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) due to MenW in Portugal between 2003 and 2019, and to genetically characterize popu...

Vaccines against Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B strains – What does genomic...

Bettencourt, Célia; Nogueira, Paulo; Gomes, João Paulo; Simões, Maria João

In Portugal, Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B (MenB) is the most common serogroup causing invasive meningococcal disease. To protect against MenB disease two protein based MenB vaccines are available in Portugal, the 4CMenB that was licenced in 2014 and included in the routine immunization program in October 2020, and the bivalent rLP2086 vaccine licensed in 2017. The aim of this study was to predict the cove...

Lung abscess due to Neisseria meningitidis serogroup X-unexpected virulence of ...

Bettencourt, Célia; Nunes, Alexandra; Correia, Ana Maria; Gomes, João Paulo; Simões, Maria João

To report the first case of a lung abscess caused by Neisseria meningitidis (Nm) and to genetically characterize the rare underlying capsule switching event. The strain (PT NmX) was subjected to whole genome sequencing, and a comparative gene-by-gene analysis was performed based on 1605 N. meningitidis core loci that constitute the MLST core-genome scheme (cgMLST) V1.0. All ~ 9,600 genomes available on Neisseri...
