Caldeira, A; Schiavon, N; Salvador, Cátia; Mirao, J; Candeias, A

Hypogenic caves represent unique environments for the development of specific microbial communities that need to be studied. Caves with rock art pose an additional challenge due to the fragility of the paintings and engravings and to microbial colonization which may induce chemical, mechanical and aesthetic alterations. Therefore, it is essential to understand the communities that thrive in these environments a...

detection for yeast and bacteria in wood slabs by RNA FISH

Vieira, Ricardo; Candeias, António; González Pérez, Marina; Caldeira, Ana Teresa; Caldeira, A

The deterioration of cultural heritage objects and assets (mural paintings, statues, and many other art objects made of wood, stone, paper, ceramic, glass, inter alia) can be caused by microorganisms [1]. One of the most important steps for applying adequate conservation and protection measures is early identification and monitorization of microbial colonization. The conventional culture-based methods used so f...

Intestinal Obstruction of Uncommon Cause and Point-of-Care Ultrasonography - Wh...

Capela, T; Sousa, P; Caldeira, A; Pereira, E

Malignant neoplasms of the small bowel, especially from the jejunum, are among the rarest types of cancer. Given its location, a delayed diagnosis is frequent and sometimes only made in an emergency context. The authors present a case of intestinal obstruction, where ultrasonography was pivotal in establishing a diagnosis. Point-of-care ultrasonography seems to be particularly sensitive in assessing emergency p...

Rodrigues, C; Pereira, E; Caldeira, A; Santos, A; Sousa, H; Banhudo, A

Immobilization of amidase in polymeric matrixes

Vieira, R; Quaresma, R; Salvador, Cátia; Martins, M; Arteiro, J; Castanheiro, J; Caldeira, A

The catalytic activity of amidase immobilized in alginate and PVA matrixes were studied in the acetamide hydrolyse. It was observed that the recovery (immobilized cells activity / free cells activity x100) of PVA membrane (20% w/w)+ cells is highest.
