European pollen reanalysis, 1980–2022, for alder, birch, and olive

Mikhail, Sofiev; Palamarchuk, Julia; Kouznetsov, Rostislav; Abramidze, Tamuna; Adams-Groom, Berley; Antunes, Célia; Ariño, Arturo; Bastl, Maximilian

The dataset presents a 43 year-long reanalysis of pollen seasons for three major allergenic genera of trees in Europe: alder (Alnus), birch (Betula), and olive (Olea). Driven by the meteorological reanalysis ERA5, the atmospheric composition model SILAM predicted the flowering period and calculated the Europe-wide dispersion pattern of pollen for the years 1980–2022. The model applied an extended 4-dimensional ...

The advent of automatic pollen and fungal spore monitoring over the past few years has brought about a paradigm change. The provision of real-time information at high temporal resolution opens the door to a wide range of improvements in terms of the products and services made available to a widening range of end-users and stakeholders. As technology and methods mature, it is essential to properly quantify the i...

Over the last decade, the number of forest fires in Brazil has been increasing continuously. In 2024, the number of forest fires in São Paulo state reached unprecedented levels. This phenomenon, combined with unfavorable conditions for pollutant concentrations, given temperature and precipitation anomalies, resulted in high concentrations of pollutants for several weeks, mainly affecting the number of hospitali...

The allergenic potential of green urban areas in the Macaronesian islands: the ...

Camacho, Irene; Macías-de-la-Rosa, Álvaro; Camacho, Roberto; Agnieszka Grinn-Gofroń; Cariñanos, Paloma

Public gardens are elements that constitute the urban green infrastructure. Such units provide ecosystem services that are becoming a key concern in urban planning strategies. In this survey the allergenic potential of two public gardens in Funchal, a city exhibiting sub tropical and Mediterranean climatic features, was assessed. Different allergenic risk scenarios were considered, and the Allergenicity Indexes...

The Place of Urban Food Forests in Cities of the 21st Century

Cariñanos, Paloma; Borelli, Simone; Conigliaro, Michela; Fini, Alessio

The history of urban food forests (UFFs) dates back to ancient times, when civilizations incorporated edible species into wild forests to create an ecosystem as natural as and self-sufficient as possible. Since the second half of the 20th century, the practices of integrating edible plants into ornamental landscapes have spread throughout the world. Currently, UFFs must face a number of challenges similar to th...

The impact of allergens emitted by urban green spaces on health is one of the main disservices of ecosystems. The objective of this work is to establish the potential allergenic value of some tree species in urban environments, so that the allergenicity of green spaces can be estimated through application of the Index of Urban Green Zones Allergenicity (IUGZA). Multiple types of green spaces in Mediterranean ci...

Edible urban forests as part of inclusive, sustainable cities

Castro, José; Ostoic, Silvija Krajter; Cariñanos, Paloma; Fini, Alessio; Sitzia, Tommaso

Feeding an increasingly urban population and ensuring the economic and social well-being of urban dwellers will be the primary challenge for cities in coming decades. The impacts of climate change are expected to slow down urban economic growth, exacerbate environmental degradation, increase poverty and erode urban food security. Many cities are on a quest for more sustainable urbanization pathways that will en...
