Veríssimo, M; Guimarães, D; Casal, D; Carvalho, S; Matias, M; Barbosa, R; Bexiga, J

Providencia rettgeri is a Gram-negative bacillus that is most usually seen in urinary tract infections. Skin and soft tissue infections with P rettgeri are rare and there few case reports described in the literature. A 43-yearold woman presented to the emergency department with a leg ulcer of 3 months duration. Microbiological results isolated P rettgeri and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. She underwent surgical debrid...

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation as an Add-on Treatment to Cognitive-Beh...

Carvalho, S; Gonçalves, ÓF; Brunoni, AR; Fernandes-Gonçalves, A; Fregni, F; Leite, J

Background: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) affects more than 264 million people worldwide. Current treatments include the use of psychotherapy and/or drugs, however ~30% of patients either do not respond to these treatments, or do not tolerate the side effects associated to the use of pharmacological interventions. Thus, it is important to study non-pharmacological interventions targeting mechanisms not direct...

BACKGROUND Medical therapy for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction evolved since trials validated the use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs). We sought to evaluate the performance of ICDs in reducing mortality in the era of modern medical therapy by means of a systematic review and meta-analysis of contemporary randomized clinical trials of drug therapy for heart failure with reduced eje...

Carvalho, S; Abreu, CM; Ferreira, D; Lima, L; Ferreira, JA; Santos, LL; Ribeiro, R; Grenha, V; Martínez-Fernández, M; Duenas, M; Suárez-Cabrera, C

Bladder cancer is the most common malignancy of the urinary tract, having one of the highest recurrence rates and progression from non-muscle to muscle invasive bladder cancer that commonly leads to metastasis. Cystoscopy and urine cytology are the standard procedures for its detection but have limited clinical sensitivity and specificity. Herein, a microfluidic device, the UriChip, was developed for the enrich...

One step forward towards the development of eco-friendly antifouling coatings: ...

Vilas-Boas, C.; Carvalhal, F.; Pereira, B.; Carvalho, S; Sousa, E.; Pinto, M.M.M.; Calhorda, M.J.; Vasconcelos, V.; Almeida, J.R.; Silva, E.R.

Marine biofouling represents a global economic and ecological challenge and few eco-friendly antifouling agents are available. The aim of this work was to establish the proof of concept that a recently synthesized nature-inspired compound (gallic acid persulfate, GAP) can act as an eco-friendly and effective antifoulant when immobilized in coatings through a non-release strategy, promoting a long-lasting antifo...

A granular cell tumor: an unusual colon polyp

Leal, T; Carvalho, S; Costa, JM

We read with interest the article by Sevilla Ribota et al1 that described an unexpected finding of a granular cell tumour (GCT) of the rectum, which was removed by band ligation-assisted mucosectomy. We present a similar case of a GCT of the cecum, which was resected using a different endoscopic procedure.
