Microbial synthesis and transformation of inorganic and organic chlorine compounds

Atashgahi, Siavash; Liebensteiner, Martin G.; Janssen, Dick B.; Smidt, Hauke; Stams, Alfons Johannes Maria; Sipkema, Detmer

Organic and inorganic chlorine compounds are formed by a broad range of natural geochemical, photochemical and biological processes. In addition, chlorine compounds are produced in large quantities for industrial, agricultural and pharmaceutical purposes, which has led to widespread environmental pollution. Abiotic transformations and microbial metabolism of inorganic and organic chlorine compounds combined wit...

Isolation and characterization of a Rhodococcus strain able to degrade 2-fluoro...

Duque, Anouk F.; Hasan, Syed A.; Bessa, Vânia S.; Carvalho, Maria F.; Samin, Ghufrana; Janssen, Dick B.; Castro, Paula M. L.

A pure bacterial culture able to utilize 2- fluorophenol (2-FP) as sole carbon and energy source was isolated by selective enrichment from sediments collected from a contaminated site in Northern Portugal. 16S rRNA gene analysis showed that the organism (strain FP1) belongs to the genus Rhodococcus. When grown aerobically on 2-FP, growth kinetics of strain FP1 followed the Luong model. An inhibitory effect of i...

Labrys portucalensis sp. nov., a fluorobenzenedegrading bacterium isolated from...

Carvalho, Maria F.; Marco, Paolo De; Duque, Anouk F.; Pacheco, Catarina C.; Janssen, Dick B.; Castro, Paula M. L.

A detailed classification of a novel bacterial strain, designated F11T, capable of degrading fluorobenzene as a sole carbon and energy source, was performed by using a polyphasic approach. This Gram-negative, rod-shaped, non-motile, non-spore-forming, aerobic bacterium was isolated from a sediment sample collected from an industrially contaminated site in northern Portugal. The predominant whole-cell fatty acid...

Degradation of Fluorobenzene by Rhizobiales Strain F11 via ortho Cleavage of 4-...

Carvalho, Maria F.; Ferreira, Maria Isabel M.; Moreira, Irina S.; Castro, Paula M. L.; Janssen, Dick B.

The aerobic metabolism of fluorobenzene by Rhizobiales sp. strain F11 was investigated. Liquid chromatography- mass spectrometry analysis showed that 4-fluorocatechol and catechol were formed as intermediates during fluorobenzene degradation by cell suspensions. Both these compounds, unlike 3-fluorocatechol, supported growth and oxygen uptake. Cells grown on fluorobenzene contained enzymes for the ortho pathway...
