The conservationist community is giving special attention to epigean insects due to their importance in the preservation of terrestrial habitats. There is a long history of exploitation of the South American river turtle Podocnemis expansa. Conservation efforts for this species started in the 1960s but best practices were not established, and population trends and the number of nesting females protected remained unknown. In 2014 we formed a working group to discuss conservation strategies and to compile population data across the species' range. We analy...

Protected areas: A focus on Brazilian freshwater biodiversity

Azevedo-Santos, Valter Monteiro de; Frederico, Renata Guimarães; Fagundes, Camila Kurzmann; dos Santos Pompeu, Paulo; Pelicice, Fernando Mayer

Brazil has a variety of aquatic ecosystems and rich freshwater biodiversity, but these components have been constantly damaged by the expansion of unsustainable activities. An array of different conservation strategies is needed, especially the creation of protected areas (PAs, hereafter). However, Brazil's PAs are biased towards terrestrial ecosystems and we argue that current PAs have limited efficacy in the ...

Fagundes, Camila Kurzmann; Behr, Everton Rodolfo; Kotzian, Carla Bender

The study of the feeding ecology of Rhinodoras dorbignyi was conducted in three sites of the Ibicuí river, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from December 1999 to January, 2003. The specimens were sampled bimonthly. The feeding spectrum was determined combining the frequency of the occurrence with the volume of each alimentary item, in order to obtain the feeding index (IAi). The spatial analysis was based on the diet...
