We report the genome sequence of sp. strain EG35 isolated from the octocoral sampled off the coast of Portugal. We reveal the coding potential for the biosynthesis of polyhydroxyalkanoates - biodegradable polyesters that may serve bioplastics production, diverse homoserine lactone-like communication signals, and four putatively novel natural products.

Avaliação da atividade inibitória da proteína tipo Lisil oxidase 2 (LOXL2) de p...

Ferreira, Sandra; Rijo, Patrícia; Costa, João Guilherme; Saraiva, Nuno; Santos, Beatriz; Uriel, Clara; Goméz, Ana María; Díaz-Lanza, A. M.

Anthracyclines versus no anthracyclines in the neoadjuvant strategy for HER2+ b...

Deescalation strategies omitting anthracyclines (AC) have been explored in early human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer (HER2+ EBC), showing similar efcacy regarding pathological complete response (pCR) and long-term outcomes as AC-containing regimens. The standard treatment for this tumor subtype is based on chemotherapy and dual HER2 blockade with trastuzumab and pertuzumab, with AC-c...

Increased antibacterial properties of indoline-derived phenolic Mannich bases

Rimpiläinen, Tatu; Nunes, Alexandra; Calado, Rita; Fernandes, Ana S.; Andrade, Joana; Ntungwe, Epole; Spengler, Gabriella; Szemerédi, Nikoletta

The search for antibacterial agents for the combat of nosocomial infections is a timely problem, as antibiotic-resistant bacteria continue to thrive. The effect of indoline substituents on the antibacterial properties of aminoalkylphenols was studied, leading to the development of a library of compounds with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) as low as 1.18 μM. Two novel aminoalkylphenols were identified ...

Stimulation of cell invasion by the Golgi Ion Channel GAAP/TMBIM4 via an H2O2-D...

Almeida, Nuno; Carrara, Guia; Palmeira, Carlos M.; Fernandes, Ana S.; Parsons, Maddy; Smith, Geoffrey L.; Saraiva, Nuno

The mechanisms by which the Golgi apparatus (GA) impacts on cell invasion are poorly understood. The human Golgi Anti-Apoptotic Protein (hGAAP, also known as TMBIM4) is a highly conserved Golgi cation channel that modulates intracellular Ca2+ fluxes. Human GAAP is expressed in all human tissues, is essential for cell viability and provides resistance against a range of apoptotic stresses. Furthermore, hGAAP enh...

Influence of culture conditions towards optimal carotenoid production by Gordon...

Fernandes, Ana S.; Paixão, Susana M.; Silva, Tiago; Roseiro, J. Carlos; Alves, Luís

ABSTRACT: With the increasing awareness on the toxicity of several synthetic dyes, demand for pigments from natural sources, such as microbial carotenoids, has gained interest as a promising safe alternative colour additive. In this study, a surface response methodology based on the Doehlert distribution for two factors [% of glucose in a mixture of glucose + fructose (10 g/L total sugars), and sulfate concentr...

European contribution to the study of ROS: A summary of the findings and prospe...

Egea, Javier; Fabregat, Isabel; Frapart, Yves M; Ghezzi, Pietro; Görlach, Agnes; Kietzmann, Thomas; Kubaichuk, Kateryna; Knaus, Ulla G.

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) provides an ideal framework to establish multi-disciplinary research networks. COST Action BM1203 (EU-ROS) represents a consortium of researchers from different disciplines who are dedicated to providing new insights and tools for better understanding redox biology and medicine and, in the long run, to finding new therapeutic strategies to target dysregu...

Oxidative injury in V79 Chinese hamster cells: protective

Fernandes, Ana S.; Serejo, João; Gaspar, Jorge; Cabral, Fátima; Bettencourt, Ana F.; Rueff, José; Castro, Matilde; Costa, Judite; Oliveira, Nuno G.

Oxidative cell injury could be induced by different reactive oxygen species (ROS) operating in multiple pathways. The present work is focused on three different models of oxidative stress: the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system (XXO), an extracellular superoxide anion generator; tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), an analogue of lipid hydroperoxides; and doxorubicin (Dox), an anticancer drug. Superoxide and peroxyl r...

Macrocyclic copper(II) complexes

Fernandes, Ana S.; Gaspar, Jorge; Cabral, M. Fatima; Caneiras, Catia; Guedes, Rita; Rueff, Jose; Castro, Matilde; Costa, Judite; Oliveira, Nuno G.

Synthetic superoxide dismutase mimetics have emerged as a potential novel class of drugs for the treatment of oxidative stress related diseases. Among these agents, metal complexes with macrocyclic ligands constitute an important group. In this work we synthesized five macrocyclic copper(II) complexes and evaluated their ability to scavenge the superoxide anions generated by the xanthine-xanthine oxidase system...
