Chlamydia trachomatis infection is the most prevalent sexually transmitted bacterial infection in the world. Being associated with a large number of asymptomatic carriers, the diagnosis is frequently challenging and requires appropriate laboratory testing. In Portugal, the incidence of the disease has been consistently increasing in recent years, meaning that special awareness is required for case identificatio...

Pathogen genome sequencing during epidemics enhances our ability to identify and understand suspected clusters and investigate their relationships. Here, we combine genomic and epidemiological data of the 2022 mpox outbreak to better understand early viral spread, diversification and transmission dynamics. By sequencing 52% of the confirmed cases in Portugal, we identified the mpox virus sublineages with the hi...

The infectious risk associated with biological therapy is well studied today and screening and prophylaxis strategies have been stablished. However, this may not be true for systemic steroids or DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) such as methotrexate and cyclosporine, even after long term use. The dose and duration of therapy with systemic steroids are related to the occurrence of opportunistic inf...

Previously, we identified a Chlamydia trachomatis Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) recombinant strain possessing a unique non-LGV ompA genotype. Here, culture-independent genome sequencing confirms its circulation in Europe, Middle East and North America, and unveils genetic evidence of emergence of antibiotic resistance. Multi-country and systematic molecular surveillance is needed.

Previously, we identified a Chlamydia trachomatis lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) recombinant strain possessing a non-LGV ompA genotype. Here, culture-independent genome sequencing confirms its circulation in Europe, Middle East, and North America, and unveils emergence of antibiotic resistance. Broad surveillance is needed.

Background: Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) is a sexual transmitted infection (STI), currently endemic within the population of men who have sex with men (MSM) of Western Countries. L2B variant has been reported as the predominant strain in the current LGV epidemics, although a shift towards L2-434 has been observed in some European countries. Objectives: To evaluate and characterize the population with LGV infe...
