Low-cost acoustic cavitation characterization inside of opaque chamber through ...

Fernandes, José; Ramísio, Paulo J.; Puga, Hélder

[Excerpt] Acoustic cavitation, induced by ultrasound, is key in sonolysis (Weissler, 1994). Effective cavitation monitoring is essential but current methods are costly, complex, and polluting. Piezoelectric sensors offer a promising alternative due to their affordability, simplicity, and real-time monitoring capability (Wu et al., 2022).

Tourism-led change of the city centre

Fernandes, José; Chamusca, Pedro; Lois, Rubén; Madureira, Helena; Mattos, Juliano; Pinto, Jorge

In multicentric and increasingly complex urban regions, a city centre reinvents itself. In the case of Porto, tourism was essential for its “Baixa” renaissance. A relevant increase in visitors meant also a dramatic increase in real estate prices and significant land-use change. In field interviews, retailers noticed a “new life” before COVID-19 arrived, remarking on the positive role of tourism on urban rehabil...

Flexible pressure and temperature microsensors for textile-integrated wearables

Santos, Dimitri Emmanuel dos; Queiroz, José Bento; Garcia, Inês Sofia; Vieira, João; Fernandes, José; Sotgiu, Edoardo; Minas, Graça; Bouçanova, Maria

Environmental factors, such as pressure and temperature, are known to contribute to the formation of ulcers that seriously affect bedridden individuals. Researchers have proposed several technologies to achieve the long-term monitoring of those parameters, usually relying on sensing mats, which poses difficulties in correlating the measurements with specific parts of the body. In this work, we aim to develop mi...

Design and fabrication of terahertz antenna arrays with integrated graphene mod...

Silva, Rui; Fernandes, José; Alpuim, P.; Mendes, P. M.

The Terahertz band is considered the next frontier for wireless communications, leading to unprecedent available bandwidth, enabling unforeseen end-user devices technologies, supported by the announced 6G technologies that will make use of this band, or enabling new technological solutions at the sensing or medical application level.

Enhanced effects of ultrasonic cavitation on the removal efficiency of ciproflo...

Fernandes, José; Ramísio, Paulo J.; Puga, Hélder

This study investigates the potential of ultrasonic-assisted (20kHz and 65±5 W) adsorption processes in wastewater treatment. The enhanced effects of ultrasonic cavitation on Ciprofloxacin and Cu (II) removal efficiency by adsorption on a Kaolinite and municipal organic waste compost (OC) adsorption media were studied and discussed. Experimental results indicate that within the first minute, more than 95% of th...

Urban rehabilitation and tourism: lessons from Porto (2010–2020)

Fernandes, José; Chamusca, Pedro; Pinto, Jorge; Tenreiro, José; Figueiredo, Pedro

Cities experience rapid growth and transformation. Over the past decades, change has been particularly intense and complex, associated to globalization, spatial compression and temporal acceleration. Within this context, the EU funds introduced new urban rehabilitation dynamics that made a city center more and more attractive. This, alongside the growth of international tourism, has increased the number of city...

Advances in Geoengineering, Geotechnologies, and Geoenvironment for Earth Syste...

Chaminé, Helder I.; Fernandes, José

This book comprises the peer-reviewed proceedings of the 1st Conference on Georesources, Geomaterials, Geotechnologies and Geoenvironment (4GEO), Porto, Portugal, on November 7–8, 2019. The book interests all researchers, practitioners, and students in engineering geosciences, geotechnics, georesources, materials engineering, and earth and environmental sciences. Georesources, geomaterials, geotechnologies, and...

Survey and Explorations of the Prehistoric Sites at the Highlands of Southwest ...

Matos, Daniela de; Nora, David; Francisco, Rui; Fernandes, José; Neto, Manuel Sahando; Robakiewicz, Elena

The area of the escarpment of Angola between Namib and Huíla Province, about 150 km from the Atlantic coast, yields abundant evidence for human activity throughout the Stone Age. There is a high concentration of open-air sites with stone tools classified as Early (ESA) and Middle Stone Age (MSA) by past explorers. At the top of the plateau, the Chela group rocks and particularly the Leba dolomites yield a serie...

Wastewater Electrolysis for Hydrogen Production

Cartaxo, Marco; Fernandes, José; Gomes, Mário; Pinho, Henrique J. O.; Nunes, Valentim; Coelho, Paulo

Due to its highest gravimetric energy density, H2 has been regarded as the preferred clean-energy carrier, with potentially environmentally-friendly production through the solar-assisted WS. Since human activities generate enormous amounts of WW, H2 production from this new resource has gained attention as an emergent technology. This paper addresses the most relevant and current aspects of H2 production from W...
