Multi-alphabetic hypercubes

Francisco, Carla; Mexia, João T.; Oliveira, Manuela; Carvalho, Francisco

These hypercubes generalize the well-known Graeco-Latin squares. In one dimension m hypercube we have pm 'points' with m coordinates taking the values 0; 1; : : : ; p 1. In each point we locate letters from m distinct alphabets. When we vary one of the coordinates, we get all the letters of each of the alphabets. We show, how to use vector spaces over Galois Fields to obtain such hypercubes. Moreover, these hyp...

Chorionic villus sampling: 10 years of experience in a University referral center

Martins, Ana Teresa; Francisco, Carla; Correia, Hildeberto; Cohen, Álvaro

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to estimate our center-specific CVS-related miscarriage rate. Methods: This is an observational retrospective study of women submitted to a CVS in our hospital, between January 1st, 2007 and December 31st, 2016. Maternal and pregnancy characteristics, procedure details, genetic results and pregnancy outcomes of all patients were collected. The FMF miscarriage risk algor...

Hadamard matrices on error detection and correction: useful links to BIBD

Francisco, Carla; Oliveira, Teresa A.; Oliveira, Amilcar; Carvalho, Francisco

In the areas of Computer Science and Telecommunications there is a huge amount of applications in which error control, error detection and error correction are crucial tools to enable reliable delivery of digital data over unreliable communication, thus providing quality of service. Hadamard matrices can almost directly be used as an error-correcting code using an Hadamard code, generalized in Reed-Muller codes...

Hadamard matrices and links to information theory

Francisco, Carla; Oliveira, Amilcar; Grilo, Luis; Oliveira, Teresa A.

The existence of Hadamard matrices remains one of the most challenging open questions in combinatorics. Substantial progress on their existence has resulted from advances in algebraic design theory using deep connections with linear algebra, abstract algebra, finite geometry, number theory, combinatorics and optimization. The construction and analysis of Hadamard matrices, and their use on combinatorial designs...

Using R in experimental design with BIBD: an application in health sciences

Francisco, Carla; Oliveira, Amilcar; Ferreira, Agostinho; Oliveira, Teresa A.

Considering the implementation of an Experimental Design, in any field, the experimenter must pay particular attention and look for the best strategies in the following steps: planning the design selection, conduct the experiments, collect observed data, proceed to analysis and interpretation of results. The focus is on providing both - a deep understanding of the problem under research and a powerful experimen...

HANSEN DISEASE AND PREGNANCY

Lima, Ana Furtado; Francisco, Carla; Mendes, Neuza; Guerreiro, Cristina; Vieira, Raquel; Campos, Ana

Hansen disease, commonly called Leprosy, is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae. In the past, the seriousness of the presentation of this disease associated with the inexistence of appropriate treatment, led to the stigmatization of these patients. Fortunately, the way we look now to Hansen disease has changed thanks to the existence of new antibacillary drugs. With migration phenomenon, we see...

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in a spontaneous pregnancy.

Francisco, Carla; Júlio, Catarina; Pinto, Graça; Martins, Ana Teresa; Ferreira, Amadeu; Martins, Luísa

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is considered to be an iatrogenic complication of ovulation induction therapy. However, OHSS may rarely be associated with spontaneous ovulatory cycles, usually in multiple or molar gestations or hypothyroidism. Clinical manifestations vary and may be potentially fatal in severe cases.A 28-year-old primigravid, with no history of an infertility treatment, presented with ...
