EuroAGE+: um projeto para melhorar a qualidade de vida dos idosos, através da u...

Marques, Ermelinda; Pires, Nuno; Vaz, Cláudia; Brito, Ana Raquel Costa; Serra, Nuno; Hornero Sánchez, Roberto; Gómez-Raja, Jonathan; Rocha, Rui

The Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT) represents the rise of a new paradigm enabling robots to serve not only as autonomous units but also as intelligent interconnected entities that can interact, collaborate, and share information through the edge, cloud and other data networks. IoRT is a technological progress and the fusion of Robotics with the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and edge...

Ontological framework for high-level task replanning for autonomous robotic sys...

Bernardo, Rodrigo; Sousa, João M.C.; Gonçalves, Paulo

Several frameworks for robot control platforms have been developed in recent years. However, strategies that incorporate automatic replanning have to be explored, which is a requirement for Autonomous Robotic Systems (ARS) to be widely adopted. Ontologies can play an essential role by providing a structured representation of knowledge. This paper proposes a new framework capable of replanning high-level tasks i...

Recurrence, Microevolution, and Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Legionella pneumophi...

Manageiro, Vera; Borges, Vítor; Rodrigues, Raquel; Bettencourt, Célia; Silva, Cecília; Gomes, João Paulo; Gonçalves, Paulo

We investigated molecular evolution and spatiotemporal dynamics of atypical Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 sequence type 1905 and determined its long-term persistence and linkage to human disease in dispersed locations, far beyond the large 2014 outbreak epicenter in Portugal. Our finding highlights the need for public health interventions to prevent further disease spread.

Guinea-Bissau: avoiding the reputation of being a failed state

Gonçalves, Paulo; Leandro, Francisco José

This paper poses and answers the following research question: How may Guinea-Bissau overcome its permanent governance instability and avoid becoming a “failed state”? This question is particularly important, not only in the context of circumventing being exposed to the economic interests of external actors, but also, to understand the state domestic weaknesses. Guinea-Bissau is a partially archipelagic small st...

A novel control architecture based on behavior trees for an omni-directional mo...

Bernardo, Rodrigo; Sousa, João M.C.; Botto, Miguel Ayala; Gonçalves, Paulo

Robotic systems are increasingly present in dynamic environments. This paper proposes a hierarchical control structure wherein a behavior tree (BT) is used to improve the flexibility and adaptability of an omni-directional mobile robot for point stabilization. Flexibility and adaptability are crucial at each level of the sense–plan–act loop to implement robust and effective robotic solutions in dynamic environm...

Standardizing an ontology for ethically aligned robotic and autonomous systems

Houghtaling, Michael A.; Fiorini, Sandro; Fabiano, Nicola; Gonçalves, Paulo; Ulgen, Ozlem; Haidegger, Tamás; Carbonera, Joel Luis

Domain-specific ontologies support system design and can establish a framework for fulfilling user-level, safety, or ethical requirements. The IEEE 7007-2021 Ontological Standard for ethically driven robotics and automation systems is the first industry standard to introduce a structure of ontologies concerning robot ethics and related fields, such as data privacy, transparency, responsibility, and accountabili...

Defending the defender: adversarial learning based defending strategy for learn...

Sheikh, Zakir Ahmad; Singh, Yashwant; Singh, Pradeep Kumar; Gonçalves, Paulo

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are prone to many security exploitations due to a greater attack surface being introduced by their cyber component by the nature of their remote accessibility or non-isolated capability. Security exploitations, on the other hand, rise in complexities, aiming for more powerful attacks and evasion from detections. The real-world applicability of CPS thus poses a question mark due to s...
