Catharanthus roseus produces a diverse range of specialized metabolites of the monoterpenoid indole alkaloid (MIA) class in a heavily branched pathway. Recent great progress in identification of MIA biosynthesis genes revealed that the different pathway branch genes are expressed in a highly cell type- and organ-specific and stress-dependent manner. This implies a complex control by specific transcription facto...

Patch testing with 2.0% (0.60 mg/cm2) formaldehyde instead of 1.0% (0.30 mg/cm2...

BACKGROUND: The currently used patch test concentration for formaldehyde is 1.0% (wt/vol) in water. However, clinical experience and previous studies suggest that 1.0% might be insufficient for detecting an optimized number of clinically relevant cases of contact allergy to formaldehyde. OBJECTIVES: To validate earlier patch test results for comparison of 1% (wt/vol) and 2% (wt/vol) formaldehyde in water, and t...

BACKGROUND: Positive patch test reactions to p-phenylenediamine (PPD) are common. PPD is used in oxidative hair dyes and is also present in dark henna temporary 'tattoos'. Cross-sensitization to other contact allergens may occur. Because subjects sensitized to PPD are at risk of clinically severe reactions upon hair dyeing, there is a need for 'current' prevalence data on PPD sensitization. OBJECTIVES: To compa...

Hand eczema severity and quality of life: a cross-sectional, multicentre study ...

Agner, T; Andersen, KE; Brandão, FM; Bruynzeel, DP; Bruze, M; Frosch, P; Gonçalo, Margarida; Goossens, A; Le Coz, C; Rustemeyer, T; White, IR

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Hand eczema is a chronic disease with negative impact on quality of life (QoL). In this study, QoL in hand eczema patients is assessed and related to age, sex, severity, and diagnostic subgroups. METHODS: A total of 416 patients with hand eczema from 10 European patch test clinics participated in the study. Data on QoL were obtained from a self-administered questionnaire using the Der...

Allergic contact dermatitis from modified colophonium in wound dressings

Pereira, TM; Flour, M; Goossens, A

This study concerns a 69-year-old female patient with a longstanding history of venous ulcerations on both lower legs and multiple sensitivities, who developed eczematous lesions with the hydrocolloid dressing Combiderm (Convatec Ltd., a Bristol-Myers Squibb division, Ickenham, Middlesex, UK). Epicutaneous tests were positive to this dressing and to a modified colophonium derivative, i.e. glyceryl rosinate, how...

An Update on Airborne Contact Dermatitis: 2001-2006

Santos, R; Goossens, A

Reports on airborne dermatoses are mainly published in the context of occupational settings. Hence, in recent years, dermatologists and also occupational physicians have become increasingly aware of the airborne source of contact dermatitis, resulting mainly from exposure to irritants or allergens. However, their occurrence is still underestimated, because reports often omit the term 'airborne' in relation to d...

Mercaptobenzothiazole or the mercapto-mix: which should be in the standard series?

Diepgen, T; Bruynzeel, DP; Andersen, KE; Brandão, FM; Bruze, M; Gonçalo, Margarida; Goossens, A; Lathi, A; Mahler, V; Menné, T; White, IR; Wilkinson, JD

Mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) compounds are well known contact allergens. To detect rubber allergic patients we use both MBT (2% in petrolatum) and a mercapto-mix with 4 constituents of 0.5% each in our standard series. In this article the EECDRG presents data of in total 32,475 consecutive tested patients attending the respective contact dermatitis clinics from 11 centres in Europe to determine if the mix and MB...

Photopatch testing: a consensus methodology for Europe

Buynzeel, DP; Fergunson, J; Andersen, KE; Gonçalo, Margarida; English, J; Goossens, A; Hozle, E; Ibbotson, SH; Lecha, M; Lehman, P; Leonard, F

A group of interested European Contact Dermatologists/Photobiologists met to produce a consensus statement on methodology, test materials and interpretation of photopatch testing. While it is recognized that a range of local variables operate throughout Europe, the underlying purpose of the work is to act as an essential preamble to a Pan European Photopatch Test Study focusing particularly on sunscreen chemicals.
