PTS micelles for the delivery of hydrophobic methotrexate

Cerqueira, Patrícia; Noro, Jennifer Martins; Moura, Sofia; Guimarães, Diana; Silva, Carla; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur; Loureiro, Ana Isabel Sá

Polyoxyethanyl--tocopheryl sebacate (PTS) is an amphiphilic compound with self-emulsifying properties known to form micelles. In this work, we report the production of PTS micelles for the encapsulation and delivery of a hydrophobic derivative of methotrexate, MTX di-ethylated (MTX-OEt). We optimized the micelles production by testing two different techniques: auxiliary solvent and sonication. Small and homogen...

Feasibility of Gateway-Less IoT E-Health Applications

Pereira, Carlos; Guimarães, Diana; Mesquita, João; Santos, Frederico; Almeida, Luis; Aguiar, Ana

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications are a key enabler of Internet of Things (IoT) applications. One domain with growing interest in M2M/IoT is e-health, either for self-monitoring, home monitoring, or hospital systems. However, current sensing devices in this domain rely on short-range communication protocols that require a gateway (GW) for Internet connection. Smartphones have been proposed as GWs in mobil...

Assessing the ESP8266 WiFi module for the Internet of Things

Mesquita, João; Guimarães, Diana; Pereira, Carlos; Santos, Frederico; Almeida, Luis

The Internet of Things (IoT) is experiencing rapid growth and being adopted across multiple domains. For example, in industry it supports the connectivity needed to integrate smart machines, components and products in the ongoing Industry 4.0 trend. However, there is a myriad of communication technologies that complicate the needed integration, requiring gateways to connect to the Internet. Conversely, using IE...

Study of lead accumulation in bones of Wistar rats by X-ray fluorescence analys...

Guimarães, Diana; Carvalho, Maria Luisa; Geraldes, Vera; Rocha, Isabel; Santos, José Paulo

The accumulation of lead in several bones of Wistar rats with time was determined and compared for the different types of bones. Two groups were studied: a control group (n = 20), not exposed to lead and a contaminated group (n = 30), exposed to lead from birth, first indirectly through mother's milk, and then directly through a diet containing lead acetate in drinking water (0.2%). Rats age ranged from 1 to 11...
