SUMMARY: The South Portuguese Zone (SPZ) 1/200 000 and 1/400 000 scale maps and stratigraphic program in SW Iberia is presented by a LNEG-IGME consortium and funded by GEO_FPI/Interreg-POCTEP. The 1/200 000 mapped area corresponds to the border area and is based on previous work (Folha 8 and Sevilla-Puebla de Guzmán maps). The 1/400 000 map covered a larger area, from Lisbon to Seville. The following domains of...

Património Geológico Cadomiano da região de Abrantes

Henriques, S.B.A.; Alves, Paulo; Machado, Susana

SUMMARY: A well preserved Cadomian basement crops out at the contact between the Ossa Morena Zone and the Central Iberia Zone near Abrantes area. The magmatic and metamorphic activity recorded in this area indicates the existence of a long‐lived continental arc (ca. 692–540Ma) with coeval felsic and mafic magmatism and a final collisional event (ca. 540 Ma). This sequence of events, as well as several tectonic ...

Evolution of a Neoproterozoic suture in the Iberian Massif, Central Portugal: i...

Neiva, A.M.R.; Dunning, G. R.; Tajčmanová, Lucie; Henriques, S.B.A.

ABSTRACT: The existence of the late Neoproterozoic supercontinent Pannotia (ca. 650-540 Ma) is controversial. Several proxies for supercontinent assembly and break-up have been recognized. Global orogeny and granitoid magmatism, detrital zircon and monazite age peaks and extreme conditions of metamorphism are some of the proxies pointed out for supercontinent assembly. The amalgamation of Pannotia was accompani...

Assessment of metal and metalloid contamination in soils trough compositional d...

Neiva, A.M.R.; Albuquerque, M.T.D.; Antunes, I.M.H.R.; Carvalho, Paula; Santos, A.C.T.; Boente, Carlos; Cunha, Pedro Proença; Henriques, S.B.A.

Soils from the old Mortórios uranium mine area were studied to look for contamination, as they are close to two villages, up to 3 km away, and used for agriculture. They are mainly contaminated in U and As and constitute an ecological threat. This study attempts to outline the degree to which soils have been affected by the old mining activities through the computation of significant hot clusters, Traditional g...

Neiva, A.M.R.; Carvalho, Paula; Antunes, I.M.H.R.; Albuquerque, M.T.D.; Santos, António; Cunha, Pedro Proença; Henriques, S.B.A.

In the abandoned Mortórios uranium mine area there are quartz veins containing wolframite and sulphides and basic rock dykes with torbernite and autunite cutting a porphyritic granite. The basic rock dykes were exploited and produced about 27 t of U3O8, from 1982 to 1988. There are an open pit lake and nine dumps. Surface water and groundwater are contaminated in U, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Pb. Stream sed...

Geochemistry and metamorphism of the Mouriscas Complex, Ossa-Morena/Central Ibe...

Henriques, S.B.A.; Neiva, A.M.R.; Tajcmanová, L.; Dunning, G. R.

ABSTRACT: The Mouriscas Complex is a deformed and metamorphosed predominantly mafic igneous complex of Ediacaran and Ordovician age and crops out at the Ossa-Morena/Central Iberian zone boundary in the Iberian Massif, Central Portugal. It comprises amphibolite with Neoproterozoic protoliths (ca. 544 Ma), protomylonitic felsic dykes derived from younger trondhjemitic protoliths (ca. 483 Ma) and garnet amphibolit...

Cadomian magmatism and metamorphism at the Ossa Morena/Central Iberian zone bou...

Henriques, S.B.A.; Neiva, A.M.R.; Tajcmanová, L.; Dunning, G. R.

ABSTRACT: A well preserved Cadomian basement is exposed in the Iberian Massif, Central Portugal, at the Ossa Morena/Central Iberian zone boundary, which allows the determination of reliable geochemical data. A sequence of Cadomian and Variscan magmatic and tectonometamorphic events has been already described for this area and are documented in other areas of the Avalonian-Cadomian orogen. However, the geochemic...
