Laccase-mediated dopamine polymerization: a bioinspired and sustainable coating...

Magalhães, Flávia F.; Alfieri, Maria Laura; Romanyuk, Konstantin; Kholkin, Andrei; Freire, Mara G.; Napolitano, Alessandra; Tavares, Ana Paula M.

Polydopamine (PDA) has emerged as a widely used coating for various materials due to its unique properties such as robustness, biocompatibility, and antioxidant and photothermal activities. PDA coatings are usually prepared through autoxidation of dopamine under alkaline conditions, but this approach is generally timeconsuming and requires high concentrations of the starting monomer. To overcome these drawbacks...

Detection of helical water flows in sub-nanometer channels

Zelenovskii, Pavel; Soares, Márcio; Bornes, Carlos; Marin-Montesinos, Ildefonso; Sardo, Mariana; Kopyl, Svitlana; Kholkin, Andrei; Mafra, Luís

Nanoscale flows of liquids can be revealed in various biological processes and underlie a wide range of nanofluidic applications. Though the integral characteristics of these systems, such as permeability and effective diffusion coefficient, can be measured in experiments, the behaviour of the flows within nanochannels is still a matter of speculation. Herein, we used a combination of quadrupolar solid-state NM...

Exploring Charged Defects in Ferroelectrics by the Switching Spectroscopy Piezo...

Alikin, Denis; Abramov, Alexander; Turygin, Anton; Ievlev, Anton; Pryakhina, Victoria; Karpinsky, Dmitry; Hu, Qingyuan; Jin, Li; Shur, Vladimir

Monitoring the charged defect concentration at the nanoscale is of critical importance for both the fundamental science and applications of ferroelectrics. However, up-to-date, high-resolution study methods for the investigation of structural defects, such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray tomography, etc., are expensive and demand complicated sample preparation. With an example of the lanthanum-doped ...

Method for determining the chirality sign of peptide nanotubes using the dipole...

Bystrov, Vladimir; Sidorova, Alla; Lutsenko, Aleksei; Shpigun, Denis; Tverdislov, Vsevolod; Zelenovskiy, Pavel; Kopyl, Svitlana; Kholkin, Andrei

In this work the method for calculating the index and sign of chirality using the values of the dipole moments of each individual dipeptides forming a helix structure of a peptide nanotube is proposed. Calculations of the individual dipeptide dipole moments using semi-empirical quantum method PM3 and force field method Amber are preformed in the frame of HyperChem software package. Results obtained for diphenyl...

Fracture strength and fatigue endurance in Gd-doped ceria thermal actuators

Mishuk, Eran; Ushakov, Andrei; Shklovsky, Jenny; Krylov, Slava; Shacham-Diamand, Yosi; Shur, Vladimir Ya.; Kholkin, Andrei; Lubomirsky, Igor

We studied the stability of the mechanical properties and the fatigue endurance of Gd-doped ceria (CGO), which is a promising electromechanically active material for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Specifically, the fracture strength and long-term operation of plate-type circular (2 mm diameter) thermal actuators made of ≈1.15 μm thick Ce0.95Gd0.05O1.975 (CGO5) were investigated. Excitation voltage of 10...

Piezoelectricity in self-assembled peptides: a new way towards electricity gene...

Slabov, Vladislav; Kopyl, Svitlana; Santos, Marco P. Soares dos; Kholkin, Andrei

Self-assembled nanostructured peptides are of great interest nowadays due to their biocompatibility and an array of outstanding functional properties. Among them, strong piezoelectricity combined with low dielectric constant is beneficial for high voltage and power generation at the nanoscale. This Chapter is an overview of the piezoelectric phenomena in self-assembled peptides including effects of the growth c...

Defect concentration in nitrogen-doped graphene grown on Cu substrate: a thickn...

Sharma, Dhananjay K.; Fateixa, Sara; Hortigüela, María J.; Vidyasagar, Reddithota; Otero-Irurueta, Gonzalo; Nogueira, Helena I. S.; Singh, Manoj Kumar

Tuning the band-gap of graphene is a current need for real device applications. Copper (Cu) as a substrate plays a crucial role in graphene deposition. Here we report the fabrication of in-situ nitrogen (N) doped graphene via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique and the effect of Cu substrate thickness on the growth mechanism. The ratio of intensities of G and D peaks was used to evaluate the defect concen...

Rodrigues, Gonçalo da Cunha; Zelenovskiy, Pavel; Romanyuk, Konstantin; Luchkin, Sergey; Kopelevich, Yakov; Kholkin, Andrei

In our paper we provided an experimental evidence that the single-layer graphene (SLG) deposited on SiO 2 grating substrate exhibits very strong out-of-plane piezoelectric effect, several times greater than that of the best piezoceramics such as lead-zirconate titanate.
