Potential protective role of amphibian skin bacteria against water mold saprole...

Costa, Sara; Proença, Diogo Neves; Alves, Artur; Morais, Paula V.; Lopes, Isabel

Amphibian populations have experienced a severe decline over the past 40 years, driven primarily by environmental pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, and disease. This work reports, for the first time, saprolegniosis in Pelophylax perezi egg masses and saprolegniosis in amphibians in Portugal. After isolation and phylogenetic analysis, the pathogen was identified as Saprolegnia australis. Following ...

Phylogenomics as baseline for taxonomy description: Amphibiibacter pelophylacis...

Costa, Sara; Proença, Diogo Neves; Lopes, Isabel; Morais, Paula V.

Bacterial strain SL12-8T was characterized and isolated from the skin microbiota of Pelophylax perezi, the Perez’s frog. Strain SL12-8T stained Gram-negative and formed rod-shaped cells that grew optimally at 25 °C and pH 7.0–7.5. The G+C content of the DNA was 66.2 mol%. Ubiquinone 8 was the respiratory quinone identified in the studied strain and the most closely related taxon. The major fatty acids were summ...

Management Algorithm in Neurogenic Dysphagia: Indications for Instrumental Asse...

Reis, David Almeida; Costa, Frederico; Vaz, Ana; Amorim, Hugo; Pinto, Nilza; Lopes, Isabel; Festas, Maria José

Sixty-five percent of patients on the acute phase of stroke have dysphagia, a symptom that is also frequent among other neurologic diseases. Swallowing instrumental assessment (SIA) is the gold-standard on the diagnosis of neurogenic dysphagia. However, it is not always available. Algorithms and/or explicit indications for complementary diagnostic tests (CDT) prescription are not available in literature. We aim...

Exploring BPA alternatives - Environmental levels and toxicity review

Adamovsky, Ondrej; Groh, Ksenia J.; Białk-Bielińska, Anna; Escher, Beate I.; Beaudouin, R.; Mora Lagares, Liadys; Tollefsen, Knut Erik; Fenske, Martina

Bisphenol A alternatives are manufactured as potentially less harmful substitutes of bisphenol A (BPA) that offer similar functionality. These alternatives are already in the market, entering the environment and thus raising ecological concerns. However, it can be expected that levels of BPA alternatives will dominate in the future, they are limited information on their environmental safety. The EU PARC project...

Adding knowledge to the design of safer hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic) ...

Tavares, Jorge; Venâncio, Cátia; Duarte, Cláudia Margarida Gouveia; Antunes, Filipe E.; Lopes, Isabel

The architecture of hydrophobically modified polymers can be tailored to produce variants with different levels of functionality. This allows industry to apply rational design methods for the development of more environmentally friendly materials. In the present work, the ecotoxicity of six variants of hydrophobically modified poly(acrylic) acids (HMPAA), obtained by changing the crosslinked conformation, inser...

Assessing the risks of capecitabine and its active metabolite 5-fluorouracil to...

Venâncio, Cátia; Monteiro, Bruna; Lopes, Isabel; Sousa, Ana Catarina

Capecitabine (CAP, prodrug) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU, its active metabolite) are two of the most prominent cytostatics, for which no clear picture can be drawn regarding potential concentrations of effect for freshwater biota, with CAP being grouped in the least studied cytostatic, whereas 5-FU has been classified as of no and of high environmental risk. Accordingly, the present work aimed to assess the ecotoxi...

Ecotoxicological Tools to Assess Cytostatic Effects in Freshwater Environments:...

Venâncio, Cátia; Monteiro, Bruna; Francisco, Rafael; Neves, Márcia C; Freire, Mara G; Sousa, Ana C A; Lopes, Isabel

Given the growing number of cancer diseases, new cytostatic drugs are approved daily, often with concomitant development, or refinement of some of these drugs aimed at decreasing patient discomfort during the administration period (e.g., prodrugs). Classified as highly toxic, they represent a major environmental problem that may potentiate disease occurrences. For newer cytostatic and prodrugs there are no (or ...

Contributions towards the hazard evaluation of two widely used cytostatic drugs

Monteiro, Bruna; Venâncio, Cátia; Francisco, Rafael; Sousa, Ana Catarina A.; Lopes, Isabel

Cytostatic drugs are one of the most important therapeutic options for cancer, a disease that is expected to affect 29 million individuals by 2040. After being excreted, cytostatics reach wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which are unable to efficiently remove them, and consequently, they will be released into the aquatic environment. Due to the highly toxic properties of cytostatics, it is particularly rele...

Revisão sobre a avaliação da toxicidade de contaminantes ambientais em linhas c...

Martinho, Beatriz; Lopes, Isabel; Coelho, Sónia Dias

In vitro toxicity of particulate matter emissions from residential pellet combu...

Vicente, Estela D.; Figueiredo, Daniela; Gonçalves, Cátia; Lopes, Isabel; Oliveira, Helena; Kováts, Nora; Pinheiro, Teresa; Alves, Célia A.

Particulate matter emissions (PM10) from the combustion, in a residential stove, of two commercial brands of certified (ENplus A1) pellets, a non-certified brand and laboratory made pellets of acacia were tested for their ability to induce ecotoxic, cytotoxic, and mutagenic responses in unicellular organisms and a human cell line. Ecotoxicity was evaluated through the Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition ...
