Fortunato, Claudia; Ferreira, Carlos; Moura, Miguel; Almeida, Amélia; Marinho, Rui; Correia, Luís

Introduction: Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is a bariatric surgical procedure associated with a non-negligible risk of postoperative adverse events, especially fistulas, the majority of which occur at the angle of His. This adverse event requires a multidisciplinary approach involving intensive care, surgery, interventional endoscopy, and radiology. Despite the absence of an algorithmic endoscopic appro...

Background and objectives: Endoscopic band ligation (EBL) plays a critical role in patients with clinically significant portal hypertension, as variceal eradication (VE) is essential to prevent further variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (GI). The emergence of COVID-19 has led to a dramatic reduction in endoscopic activity. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 on VE, GI, and 6-month mortality...

Objectives: We aimed to analyze the efficacy and safety of endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty at 3 months as well as to determine factors influencing post-procedural weight loss. Methods: Seventy-three patients with obesity classes I, II and III (BMI 31.1-46.6 kg/m2) underwent ESG between September 2021 and April 2022 at a tertiary care hospital using Overstitch (Apollo Endosurgery, Austin, TX). ESG's efficacy and ...

In Portugal, the genetic diversity, origin of HBV and the Portuguese role in the dissemination of HBV worldwide were never investigated. In this work, we studied the epidemic history and transmission dynamics of HBV genotypes that are endemic in Portugal. HBV pol gene was sequenced from 130 patients followed in Lisbon. HBV genotype A was the most prevalent (n = 54, 41.5%), followed by D (n = 44, 33.8%), and E (...

Madeira, Filipa; Costa-Lopes, Rui; Bú, Emerson Araújo Do; Marinho, Rui

The new generation of direct-acting antivirals has improved dramatically the rates of cure for chronic hepatitis C. Yet, evidence shows that racial groups are deemed more often ineligible for hepatitis C treatment, despite no clinical evidence supporting differential treatment for Black and White patients. One possible explanation has to do with providers’ racial biases. This investigation sought to explore med...

Transmural remission improves clinical outcomes up to 5 years in Crohn's disease

Fernandes, Samuel; Serrazina, Juliana; Botto, Inês Ayala; Leal, Tiago; Guimarães, Andreia; Garcia, Joana Lemos; Rosa, Isadora; Prata, Rita

Introduction: Evidence supporting transmural remission (TR) as a long-term treatment target in Crohn's disease (CD) is still unavailable. Less stringent but more reachable targets such as isolated endoscopic (IER) or radiologic remission (IRR) may also be acceptable options in the long-term. Methods: Multicenter retrospective study including 404 CD patients evaluated by magnetic resonance enterography and colon...

Severe acute autoimmune hepatitis: how to early predict who will not respond to...

Backround: In acute severe autoimmune hepatitis (AS-AIH), the early identification of predictors of non-response to corticosteroids and the optimal timing for liver transplantation (LT) remains controversial. Aims: To determine early predictors of non-response to corticosteroids and to assess the usefulness of severity scores, namely the recently developed SURFASA. Methods: Retrospective multicentre cohort stud...

Lazarus, Jeffrey V.; Mark, Henry E.; Anstee, Quentin M.; Arab, Juan Pablo; Batterham, Rachel L.; Castera, Laurent; Cortez-Pinto, Helena; Crespo, Javier

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a potentially serious liver disease that affects approximately one-quarter of the global adult population, causing a substantial burden of ill health with wide-ranging social and economic implications. It is a multisystem disease and is considered the hepatic component of metabolic syndrome. Unlike other highly prevalent conditions, NAFLD has received little attentio...

Twenty-five years of increasing mortality from pancreatic cancer in Portugal

Marques Da Costa, Pedro; Marinho, Rui; Cortez-Pinto, Helena; Costa, Luís; Velosa, José

We conducted an epidemiological analysis on pancreatic cancer mortality trends in Portugal over the past 25 years. Using the Portuguese National Statistical Institute public database, we identified deaths attributed to malignant pancreatic cancer (ICD10-C25; ICD9/8–157) on official death certificates issued between 1991 and 2015.
