This work studies the surface characteristics, the antimicrobial activity and the aging effect, of plasma pre-treated polyamide 6,6 fabrics (PA66) coated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), with the aim to identify the optimum size of nanosilver exhibiting antibacterial properties suitable for manufacturing of hospital textiles. The release of bactericidal Ag+ ions from the 10, 20, 40, 60 and 100 nm AgNPs-coated...

Recently, renewed interest has arisen in silver nanopar@cles for biomedical devices because of their high surface energy, enhanced physicochemical and biological proper@es and extremely large surface area, which provides beAer contact with microorganisms. Atmospheric plasma is an alterna@ve and cost- compe@@ve method to wet chemical nanopar@cles deposi@on methods, avoiding the need of toxic solvents, expensive ...

PVC-based synthetic leather to provide more comfortable and sustainable vehicles

Maia, I.; Santos, Jorge Gomes; Abreu, Maria José; Miranda, Teresa; Carneiro, Noémia; Soares, Graça M. B.

Consumers are increasingly demanding the interior of cars to be comfortable even in the case of more economic commercial segments. Thus, the development of materials with thermoregulation properties has assumed renewed interest for these particular applications. An attempt has been made to prepare a multilayer PVC-based synthetic leather with paraffinic PCMs to be applied on a car seat. The thermal behaviour of...

Abstract. The development of new multifunctional textiles containing nanoparticles (NPs) has a special interest in several applications for pharmaceutical and medical products. Cu, Zn and Ag are the most promising antimicrobial NPs, exhibiting strong antibacterial activities. However, most of antimicrobial textiles coated with NPs are not able to perform a controlled release of NPs because of the high degree of...

Contribution to an efficient transmission of information to the textile fashion...

Carneiro, Noémia; Refosco, Ereany; Soares, Graça M. B.

The concepts involved in sustainable textile fashion, demanding good knowledge about raw materials, processes, end use properties and circuits amongst others, are able to determine the way the textile product is designed and the behavior of the consumer, regarding life style and buying decisions. The textile product`s life integrates raw materials, their processing, distribution, use by the consumer and destina...

Zille, Andrea; Almeida, Luís de; Amorim, M. T. Pessoa de; Carneiro, Noémia; Esteves, M. de Fátima; Silva, C.; Souto, A. Pedro

In recent years, the antimicrobial nanofinishing of biomedical textiles has become a very active, high-growth research field, assuming great importance among all available material surface modifications in the textile industry. This review offers the opportunity to update and critically discuss the latest advances and applications in this field. The survey suggests an emerging new paradigm in the production and...

Effect of particle size on silver nanoparticle deposition onto dielectric barri...

Vu, Nguyen Khanh; Zille, Andrea; Oliveira, F. R.; Carneiro, Noémia; Souto, A. Pedro

The effect on the deposition of three different size silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto a polyamide 6,6 (PA) fabric pre-treated using air dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma was investigated. The SEM, EDS, and XPS analysis confirm that the smaller is the diameter of AgNPs, the higher the amount of adsorbed NPs on the PA. The DBD treatment on PA induces a threefold increase in Ag adsorption. The result conf...
