Carvalho, Vitor Luz; Bevilaqua, Claudia Maria Leal; Iñiguez, Alena Mayo; Matthews-Cascon, Helena; Ribeiro, Felipe Bezerra

This study represents the first survey of the parasitic fauna of cetaceans off the northeastern coast of Brazil. Parasites were collected from 82 animals rescued from the states of Ceará to Bahia, including the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha. A total of 14 species of cetaceans were evaluated: Sotalia guianensis, Stenella sp., Stenella clymene, Stenella longirostris, Stenella coeruleoalba, Stenella frontalis...

Rare are the records of small cetaceans that survive nets on fishing tackles. This assertion is reinforced by the small number of dolphins and porpoises released alive from gills, and by the low frequency of healed wounds related to interaction with fishing nets, found in dead stranded animals. In this work, an unprecedented record is made of the stranding of a specimen of gray boto, Sotalia fluviatilis, on the...

Alves, Maria Danise Oliveira; Meirelles, Ana Carolina Oliveira de; Barros, Helen Maria Duarte do Rêgo; Silva, Cristine Pereira Negrão

The false orca (Pseudorca crassidens) is a dolphin of tropical zones and hot temperatures around the world. Its distribution is based on sightings and, mainly, mass stranding. In Brazil, the species has records based on strandings and accidental catches in fishing nets in the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo and Paraíba. The present work expands the distribution of thi...

This work aimed at evaluating the antifungal susceptibility and production of virulence factors by Candida spp. isolated from sirenians in Brazil. The isolates (n = 105) were recovered from the natural cavities of Amazonian and West Indian manatees and were tested for the susceptibility to amphotericin B, itraconazole, and fluconazole and for the production of phospholipases, proteases, and biofilm. The minimum...

An adult male rough-toothed dolphin, Steno bredanensis, stranded alive on Poço da Draga Beach, Fortaleza, Ceará State, northeastern Brazil.
