Lipid nanocarriers for anti-HIV therapeutics: a focus on physicochemical proper...

Faria, Maria J.; Lopes, Carla M.; Neves, José das; Lúcio, M.

Since HIV was first identified, and in a relatively short period of time, AIDS has become one of the most devastating infectious diseases of the 21st century. Classical antiretroviral therapies were a major step forward in disease treatment options, significantly improving the survival rates of HIV-infected individuals. Even though these therapies have greatly improved HIV clinical outcomes, antiretrovirals (AR...

Avobenzone-loaded and omega-3-enriched lipid formulations for production of UV ...

Caldas, Ana R.; Faria, Maria J.; Ribeiro, Artur; Machado, Raul; Gonçalves, Hugo; Gomes, Andreia C; Soares, Graça M. B.; Lopes, Carla M.; Lúcio, Marlene

Given the growing harmful effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation there is an urgent need to develop effective strategies to prevent skin damages. Therefore, hydrogel or cotton and wool fabrics were impregnated with avobenzone (AVO)-loaded and omega-3 (3)-enriched lipid formulations (liposomes LIP, nanostructured lipid carriers NLC and solid lipid nanoparticles SLN) to obtain UV blocking sunscreen gel or function...

Rational development of liposomal hydrogels: A strategy for topical vaginal ant...

Faria, Maria J.; Machado, Raul; Ribeiro, Artur; Gonçalves, Hugo; Real Oliveira, M. Elisabete C.D.; Viseu, T. M. R.; das Neves, José; Lúcio, M.

HIV/AIDS stands as a global burden, and vaginal microbicides constitute a promising strategy for topical pre-exposure prophylaxis. Preceding the development of a microbicide containing tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) and emtricitabine (FTC), in silico and in vitro studies were performed to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics of both drugs, and to study their biophysical impact in lipid model system...

Effect of protrusions on cathodic-arc-attachment mode in high-pressure arc disc...

Benilov, M. S.; Cunha, Mário D.; Faria, Maria J.

It is shown via computer simulations that a protru sion on a thermionic arc cathode may dramatically change the pattern of steady-state modes of current transfer. This happens through a bifurcation of a special type occurring at certain geom etry of the cathode and may play a role in operation of electrodes of compact high-intensity discharge lamps.
