Estimation of Annual Productivity of Sown Rainfed Grasslands Using Machine Lear...

Morais, Tiago; Jongen, M.; Tufik, C.; Rodrigues, N.; Gama, I.; Serrano, João; Domingos, T.; Teixeira, R.

Grasslands play a critical role in providing diverse ecosystem services. Sown biodiverse pastures (SBP) rich in legumes are an important agricultural innovation that increases grassland productivity and reduces the need for fertilisers. This study developed a machine learning model to obtain spatially explicit estimations of the productivity of SBP, based on field sampling data from five Portuguese farms during...

This comprehensive review describes recent advancements in the use of solid-state NMR-assisted methods and computational modeling strategies to unravel gas adsorption mechanisms and CO2 speciation in porous CO2-adsorbent silica materials at the atomic scale. This work provides new perspectives for the innovative modifications of these materials rendering them more amenable to the use of advanced NMR methods.

Different Chondrus crispus Aquaculture Methods and Carrageenan Extraction

Tanoeiro, João Rui; Fortunato, Duarte; Cotas, João; Morais, Tiago; Afonso, Clélia; Pereira, Leonel

With the notable scarcity of Chondrus crispus on the Portuguese coast, and interest in exploiting compounds such as carrageenan, this study focuses on investigating different aquaculture methods and recording the yield of carrageenan from specimens grown by different methods. We compare the growth of Chondrus crispus in aquaculture using Free Floating, Cages, Attempted Fixation on Rock, and Fixed Line similar t...

Used in high-tech and everyday products, mercury (Hg), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni) are known to be persistent and potentially toxic elements that pose a serious threat to the most vulnerable ecosystems. Despite being on the Priority Hazardous Substances List, existing studies have only assessed the individual toxicity of Co, Ni and Hg in aquatic organisms, with a focus on the latter, ignoring potential synergi...

There is a need to find new possible raw food sources with interesting nutritional values. One of the most unexploited sources are seaweeds. Thus, Ulva sp. is a green edible seaweed that shows a high growth rate in nature and can support drastic abiotic changes, such as temperature and salinity. This work aims to determine the main nutritional compounds, fatty acids (FAs) and monosaccharides profiles of Ulva sp...

Grasslands are crucial ecosystems that support and provide a diverse number of ecosystem services. Sown biodiverse pastures rich in legumes (SBP) were developed with the main goal of increasing grassland production while minimizing fertilizers inputs. In this paper, the main properties of SBP in Portugal were estimated using remote sensing and machine learning in six different farms and two production years (sp...

Cobalt (Co) is among the hazardous substances identified in aquatic environments. Industrialization and population growth have also contributed to climate change, namely in what concerns ocean temperature rise. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of temperature rise on the impacts caused by Co on Mytilus galloprovincialis. To this end, mussels were exposed for 28 days to 17 °C and 21 °C, ...

Estimating soil organic carbon of sown biodiverse permanent pastures in Portuga...

Morais, Tiago; Tufik, Camila; Rato, A.; Rodrigues, N.; Gama, I.; Jongen, M.; Serrano, João; Fangueiro, D.; Domingos, T.; Teixeira, R.

Grasslands in Portugal are key managed ecosystems, supporting and providing a diverse number of ecosystem services. Here, we developed a procedure for rapid estimation of soil organic carbon (SOC) in soil samples of sown biodiverse permanent pastures rich in legumes (SBP) in Portugal. We combined laboratory NIR spectral data analysis with artificial neural networks (ANN) to estimate the SOC content of SBP soil ...

From the reservoir to the city: a contribution to promote the sustainable use o...

Geraldes, Ana Maria; Silva, Flora; Morais, Tiago; Vale, Patrícia; Zavattieri, Carmem; Albuquerque, António

The management of reservoirs, classified as heavily modified water bodies by the Water Framework Directive (Directive 2000/60 of 23 October, amended in 2019), aims to achieve their good or very good ecological potential. However, the intense water use by human populations causes accentuated water level fluctuations, contributing to the disruption of the reservoirs´ littoral zone and to an accentuated increase i...
