Marques, Carolina S.; Cruz, Hugo; Lawrence, Simon E.; Gago, Sandra; Ramalho, João P. Prates; Morgado, Jorge; Branco, Luís C.; Burke, Anthony J.

Developing organic semiconductors (OSCs) for organic thin film transistors (OTFT) and optoelectronic applications is a challenge. We developed highly crystalline pentacyclic diamides (3) and (4) which showed good OTFT and OLED potential and energy gaps of 2.60 eV and 2.54 eV. They exhibited interesting photo and eletroluminescence activity. Both compounds showed good quantum yields (0.56 for (3) and 0.6 for (4)).

PEDOT:PSS-coated polybenzimidazole electroconductive nanofibers for biomedical ...

Sordini, Laura; Silva, João C.; Garrudo, Fábio F. F.; Rodrigues, Carlos A. V.; Marques, Ana C.; Linhardt, Robert J.; Cabral, Joaquim S. M.

Bioelectricity drives several processes in the human body. The development of new materials that can deliver electrical stimuli is gaining increasing attention in the field of tissue engineering. In this work, novel, highly electrically conductive nanofibers made of poly [2,20 - m-(phenylene)-5,50 -bibenzimidazole] (PBI) have been manufactured by electrospinning and then coated with cross-linked poly (3,4-ethyl...

A group of new boron complexes [BPh2{κ2N,N′-NC4H3-2-C(H)[double bond, length as m-dash]N-C6H4X}] (X = 4-Cl 4c, 4-Br 4d, 4-I 4e, 3-Br 4f, 2-Br 4g, 2-I 4h) containing different halogens as substituents in the N-aryl ring have been synthesized and characterized in terms of their molecular properties. Their photophysical characteristics have been thoroughly studied in order to understand whether these complexes exh...

Ultra-low noise PEDOT:PSS electrodes on bacterial cellulose: a sensor to access...

Inácio, Pedro M.C.; Medeiros, Maria C.R.; Carvalho, Tiago; Félix, Rute C.; Mestre, Ana; Hubbard, Peter C.; Ferreira, Quirina; Morgado, Jorge

This study is focused on the particular advantages of organic-based devices to measure cells that do not generate action potentials, also known as non-electrogenic cells. While there is a vast literature about the application of organic conductors to measure neurons, cardiomyocytes and brain tissues, electrical measurements of non-electrogenic cells are rare. This is because non-electrogenic cells generate weak...

Conducting polymer electrodes based on poly (3, 4 ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate were used to record electrophysiological signals from autonomous cardiac contractile cells present in embryoid bodies. Signal detection was carried out by measuring the displacement current across the polymer/electrolyte double-layer capacitance, and compared with voltage detection. While for relatively low capacita...

Polyurea dendrimer for efficient cytosolic siRNA delivery

Restani, Rita; Conde, João; Baptista, Pedro; Cidade, Maria Teresa Varanda; Bragança, Ana; Morgado, Jorge; Correia, Ilídio Joaquim Sobreira

The design of small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery materials showing efficacy in vivo is at the forefront of nanotherapeutics research. Polyurea (PURE-type) dendrimers are ‘smart’ biocompatible 3D polymers that unveil a dynamic and elegant back-folding mechanism involving hydrogen bonding between primary amines at the surface and tertiary amines and ureas at the core. Similarly, to a biological proton pump, t...

Opto-Electronic Properties of Fluorene-Based Derivatives as Precursors for Ligh...

Fratiloiu, Silvia; Fonseca, Sofia M.; Grozema, Ferdinand C.; Burrows, Hugh D.; Costa, Maria L.; Charas, Ana; Morgado, Jorge; Siebbeles, Laurens D. A.

This paper reports optical absorption spectra of oxidized fluorene copolymers obtained by chemical oxidation with Ce(IV) and by pulse radiolysis experiments in chlorinated solvents. Comparison of the results observed by the two techniques is used to provide spectral data on the copolymer radical ions and information on stability of the oxidized species. In addition, a detailed quantum chemical characterization ...

Kinetics and Thermodynamics of Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) β-Phase Formation in D...

Dias, Fernando B.; Morgado, Jorge; Maçanita, António L.; Costa, Fernando P. da; Burrows, Hugh D.; Monkman, Andrew P.

Poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) adopts a particular type of conformation in dilute solutions of the poor solvent methylcyclohexane (MCH) below 273 K, which is revealed by the appearance of a red-shifted absorption peak at 437−438 nm. The formation of this ordered conformation depends on the temperature but is independent of polymer concentration over the range studied (3−25 μg/mL). On the basis of absorption, s...
