A PESCA LÚDICO-DESPORTIVA À CARPA (CYPRINUS CARPIO):: O CASO DO CARP FISHING

Carrola, João Soares; Pereira, José; Martinho, António

Fishing in continental waters has long ceased to be practiced solely for food purposes and more contemporary societies recognise that this activity has a growing recreational and sporting value, whose dynamics are capable of generating important social and economic resources for the development of some regions of our country, especially the less developed inland regions. Technological developments in fishing eq...

HLA‐A23/HLA‐A24 serotypes and dementia interaction in the elderly: Association ...

Cardoso, Elsa M.; Gomes, Vânia Lourenço; Esgalhado, André J.; Ferreira, Débora Reste; Oliveira, Nádia; Amaral, Ana Saraiva; Martinho, António

MHC class I molecules regulate brain development and plasticity in mice and HLA class I molecules are associated with brain disorders in humans. We investigated the relationship between plasma-derived soluble human HLA class I molecules (sHLA class I), HLA class I serotypes and dementia. A cohort of HLA class I serotyped elderly subjects with no dementia/predementia (NpD, n = 28), or with dementia (D, n = 28) w...

Osteomyelitis caused by Aspergillus terreus complex in a dog: a case report

Abreu, Raquel; Martinho, António; Noiva, Rute; Pissarra, Hugo; Cota, João; Cunha, Eva; Tavares, Luis; Oliveira, Manuela

Background In dogs, the most frequently reported mycosis associated with Aspergillus spp. are respiratory infections. Systemic aspergillosis is uncommon, with reported cases been associated with several Aspergillus species. Aspergillus terreus species complex are ubiquitous organisms, unfrequently associated with local or systemic disease in animals and humans, and treatment of osteomyelitis caused by this spec...

Human Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells Regulate the Proinflammatory R...

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disabling autoimmune disease whose treatment is ineffective for one-third of patients. Thus, the immunomodulatory potential of mesenchymal stromal/stem cells (MSCs) makes MSC-based therapy a promising approach to RA. This study aimed to explore the immunomodulatory action of human bone marrow (BM)-MSCs on myeloid dendritic cells (mDCs) and monocytes, especially on cytokines/chemok...

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01; PURPOSE: Ageing is associated with alterations in the immune system as well as with alterations of the circadian rhythm. Immune cells show rhythmicity in execution of their tasks. Chronic inflammation (inflammaging), which is observed in the elderly, is mitigated by lifelong exercise. The aimed this stu...

DIAGNOSIS AND MANAGEMENT OF TWO CASES OF TROCHLEAR RIDGE FRACTURES IN DOGS.

Alexandre, Nuno; Martinho, António; Caldeira, Joana; Carvalho, Patrícia; Alves, Ricardo

Trochlear ridge fractures are extremly rare findings in small animals. In the literature to our knowledge only two cases have been described in dog. Two dogs, an adult male German Sheperd and an adult female Alentejo Mastiff were both presented for left hindlimb lameness with a two weeks duration due to probable distal extremity trauma. At the orthopaedic examination both dogs showed distal swelling, non-weight...

CD45RA, CD8β, and IFNγ Are Potential Immune Biomarkers of Human Cognitive Function

Esgalhado, AJ; Reste-Ferreira, Débora; Albino, Stephanie; Sousa, Adriana; Amaral, Ana Paula; Martinho, António; Oliveira, Isabel Tomás; Verde, Ignacio

There is increasing evidence that in humans the adaptive immunological system can influence cognitive functions of the brain. We have undertaken a comprehensive immunological analysis of lymphocyte and monocyte populations as well as of HLA molecules expression in a cohort of elderly volunteers (age range, 64-101) differing in their cognitive status. Hereby, we report on the identification of a novel signature ...

Martins, Sílvia; Carvalheiro, Tiago; Laranjeira, Paula; Martinho, António; Elvas, Luís; Gonçalves, Lino; Tomaz, C. T.; António, Natália; Paiva, Artur

IL-17-producing T cells have been implicated in the inflammatory milieu of chronic heart failure (CHF), which implies a dismal prognosis in affected patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) on the frequency and functional activity of Th17 and Tc17 cells, as well as, on IL-17 mRNA expression in patients with CHF.
