Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global societal challenge requiring the contribution of professionals along with general community citizens for their containment. Portugal is one of the European countries where a lack of knowledge on the correct use of antimicrobials and AMR problematic is preeminent. Moreover, youth demotivation to pursue science careers is emerging. To address these problems an innovative...

Purpose: Approximately 25% of older inpatients have an indwelling urinary catheter (IUC), 45-54% unnecessarily. This study aims to describe the prevalence, indications, and complications of IUC use in Portuguese older inpatients. Methods: Multicentric, cross-sectional, observational study conducted in Portuguese internal medicine wards (UriCath). Results: Of a total of 3135 inpatients from 39 hospitals, we incl...

Eosinophilic fasciitis: an atypical presentation of a rare disease

Cabral, C; Novais, A; Araujo, D; Mosca, A; Lages, A; Knock, A

Eosinophilic fasciitis, or Shulman's disease, is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by peripheral eosinophilia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The diagnosis is confirmed by a deep biopsy of the skin. The first line of treatment is corticotherapy. We present a rare case of eosinophilic fasciitis in a 27-year-old woman with an atypical presentation with symme...

mcr-1 in Carbapenemase-Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in Hospitalized Patients...

Mendes, AC; Novais, A; Campos, J; Rodrigues, C; Santos, C; Antunes, Patrícia; Ramos, H; Peixe, L.

We describe a hospital-based outbreak caused by multidrug-resistant, Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase 3-producing, mcr-1-positive K. pneumoniae sequence type 45 in Portugal. mcr-1 was located in an IncX4 plasmid. Our data highlight the urgent need for systematic surveillance of mcr-1 to support adequate therapeutic choices in the nosocomial setting.

Castanho, TC; Moreira, PS; Portugal-Nunes, C; Novais, A; Costa, PS; Palha, JA; Sousa, N; Santos, NC

Alterations in hormone levels during aging impact on cognition and mood. Serum concentration levels of testosterone (TT), estradiol (E2), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and prolactin (PRL) were assessed in 120 community-dwellers (51+ years of age, males and females), in a cross-sectional approach. Performance clusters based on executive funct...

We aim to characterise multiple ertapenem-resistant (ERT-R, n = 15) Enterobacteriaceae isolates identified as presumptive carbapenemase producers in a Portuguese hospital in a short period of time (March-July 2010). Antibiotic susceptibility patterns, beta-lactamases, genetic relatedness [pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), multi-locus sequence typing (MLST)], plasmid content and major enterobacterial pori...
