Humane slaughter in aquaculture depends on accurate assessments of insensibility, yet commonly used operational indicators remain poorly validated against neurological benchmarks. This study compared operational indicators such as the loss or recovery of equilibrium, ’eye-roll’ reflex, and ventilation reflex with visually evoked responses (VERs) in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead seabream (...

Virtual reality exposure therapy for Arachnophobia: A pilot study

Lopes, Inês; Almeida, Raquel Simões de; Gomes, Paulo Veloso; Sá, Vítor J.; Oliveira, Gonçalo; Marques, António; Machado Veloso Gomes, Paulo Sérgio

Arachnophobia is a chronic disorder leading to significant avoidance of spider-related situations. This pilot study examines the effectiveness of Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (VRET) for treating arachnophobia. The study included 25 participants who completed fear questionnaires and avoidance tests before, after and two weeks after the intervention. The intervention consisted of a session of progressive expo...

This paper presents an experimental methodology of procedural content generation (PCG) for natural environments focusing on game design and visualization. This approach allows us to define a set of instructions to shape the content generation to meet the requirements of game design and level design teams. For the validation process, we have discussed and analyzed a playtesting session.

A rule based procedural content generation system

Oliveira, Gonçalo; Almeida, Lucas; Sousa, João Paulo; Barroso, Bárbara; Barbedo, Inês

This paper presents a new method of procedural content generation (PCG) for natural environments and objects (such as terrain, biomes, river, and vegetation), with special attention to game design and visual aesthetic. Our solution allows us to define a set of rules to control the content generation to meet the requirements of game design and level design teams.

Are there differential roles in the parental behaviour of the chameleon cichlid...

Oliveira, Gonçalo; Saraiva, João; Jesus, Nuno F.; Guerreiro, Pedro Miguel

Cichlids are social fishes well known for their complex behaviour. The chameleon cichlid, Autraloheros facetus, is native to South American river drainages and is currently established in several Mediterranean-type drainages in southern Portugal as an invasive species. Their high local recruitment, territorially, and parental care activities are possible advantages in competing with native fish and achieving hi...

Concise notes on Special Holonomy with an emphasis on Calabi–Yau and G_2-Manifolds

Oliveira, Gonçalo

These are notes for a very short introduction to some selected topics on special Riemannian holonomy with a focus on Calabi-Yau and G2-manifolds. No material in these notes is original and more on it can be found in the papers/books of Bryant, Hitchin, Joyce and Salamon referenced during the text.

Crosslinking with genipin increases the acidic stability of chitosan-based materials, opening an opportunity to explore new applications. In this work, the viability of using chitosan-genipin solutions on cellulose-based materials coating was studied. Non-calendered paper and cardboard were used as raw materials. Different number of chitosan-genipin coating layers (1, 3, 6, 20, and 30) were applied and their in...
