survlab: Survival Model-Based Imputation for Laboratory Non-Detect Data

Pereira, Luís; Infante, Paulo; Ferreira, Teresa; Quaresma, Paulo

survlab provides functions for imputing non-detect values in environmental laboratory data using survival models (including Tobit models) with automatic distribution selection. Is designed specifically for working with analytical data where measurements fall below detection limits or limits of quantification (LOQ).

From biomass to battery

Benigno, Antonio; Raviolo, Sofia; Trano, Sabrina; Domenici, Sara; Castellino, Micaela; Francia, Carlotta; Gaspar, Diana; Pereira, Luís; Bella, Federico

The increasing demand for sustainable energy storage solutions has led to a growing interest in post‑lithium-ion battery technologies. In this context, potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have emerged as a promising alternative for large-scale applications due to the high natural abundance, cost-effectiveness, and favorable electrochemical properties of potassium. Hard carbon materials derived from biomass are parti...

Influence of Surface Alignment Layers on Digital Memory PDLC Devices for Electr...

Mouquinho, Ana; Pereira, Luís; Sotomayor, João

The permanent memory effect in polymer-dispersed liquid crystal systems imparts unique properties to these devices, making them well-suited for digital memory applications. By investigating the impact of homogeneous alignment layer types on this effect, we successfully developed and tested a proof-of-concept prototype capable of recording information in both opaque and transparent states within a digital process.

Pseudoappendicitis due to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis: A Case Report with a Fat...

Antunes, Cláudia; Antunes, Daniela; Santos, Cátia; Araújo, Ana; Pereira, Luís

Yersinia species often cause enterocolitis or pseudoappendicitis. Yersiniosis is mostly transmitted by raw or undercooked foods, namely pork. Clinical severity is related to states of immunosuppression or iron overload. We present the clinical case of a 79-year-old man with a history of hypertension and diabetes, who was admitted to the emergency department for right low back pain with anterior irradiation to t...

Pereira, Luís; Godinho, Luís; Branco, Fernando G.; Oliveira, Paulo da Venda

Porous concrete with expanded clay inherent porosity makes it an interesting and effective acoustic material, applied in numerous scenarios such as highways, airports and architectural structures, due to its capacity to mitigate noise pollution, by absorbing and damping sound waves. It is usually accepted that macroscopic properties such as open porosity, tortuosity or airflow resistivity of such materials play...

The Escarpão Plateau (South of Portugal)—a study case of nested geosites from t...

Veiga-Pires, Cristina; Jenkins Oliveira Fernandes, Sónia Alexandra; Moura, Delminda; Pereira, Luís

Flatfish species seem to require dietary taurine for normal growth and development. Although dietary taurine supplementation has been recommended for flatfish, little is known about the mechanisms of taurine absorption in the digestive tract of flatfish throughout ontogeny. This study described the cloning and ontogenetic expression of the taurine transporter (TauT) in the flatfish Senegalese sole (Solea senega...

The escarpão plateau (South of Portugal)—a study case of nested geosites from t...

Veiga-Pires, Cristina; Jenkins Oliveira Fernandes, Sónia Alexandra; Moura, Delminda; Pereira, Luís

Located along the southern limit of the Algarvensis aspiring UNESCO Global Geopark (aUGGp), the Escarpão Plateau is a singular geomorphological structure sculpted by fluvial, karst, and tectonic processes. The plateau is deeply scarved by the Quarteira Rivulet, forming a valley that crosses the most complete Upper Jurassic sedimentary sequence of the Eastern Algarve (Southern Portugal). This sequence includes f...

Long-Term Behavior Related to Water Ingress in Mortars Which Combine Expanded a...

Ortega, José Marcos; Branco, Fernando G.; Pereira, Luís

The water ingress plays an important role in building materials’ degradation. The use of lightweight aggregates is interesting in terms of sustainability, because they reduce the density of cement-based materials, among other advantages. The development and use of new lightweight aggregates, such as cork granulates, is a current research topic. In the present work, water ingress performance of sustainable morta...
