Editorial: Challenges in seismology to our understanding of volcanic islands an...

Fontiela, J.; Silveira, G.; Dias, N.A.; Pimentel, A.; Ramalho, R; Sigloch, K

Volcanic islands are some of the most intriguing geological features on Earth, yet the processes that lead to their formation and evolution remain largely enigmatic. Such islands exhibit complex, heterogeneous and anisotropic subsurface structures, characterized by pronounced and abrupt changes in seismic velocities, attenuation, anisotropy, and interfaces. Volcanic islands are amongst the planet’s largest and ...

Avaliação da suscetibilidade da ilha Terceira (Açores) a perigos vulcânicos

Pacheco, José; Aguiar, S.; Pimentel, A.; Ferreira, T.; Gaspar, J. L.; Queiroz, G.; Goulart, C.

ABSTRACT: Terceira Island has three active volcanic systems, including two central volcanoes and a fissure zone. Terceira’s eruptive history over the past 23,000 years has been marked by explosive eruptions of trachytic nature, with extrusion of trachytic lavas, as well as basaltic eruptions of low explosivity and hydromagmatic eruptions. All this diversity demonstrates that the island is exposed to a wide dive...

Enhanced UV flexible photodetectors and photocatalysts based on TiO2 nanoplatforms

Nunes, D.; Pimentel, A.; Araujo, A.; Calmeiro, T. R.; Panigrahi, S.; Pinto, J. V.; Barquinha, P.; Gama, F. M.; Fortunato, E.; Martins, R.

Abstract: In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanostructured films were synthesized under microwave irradiation through low temperature synthesis (80 °C) and integrated in ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors and as photocatalysts. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), tracing paper, and polyester film were tested as substrates, since they are inexpensive, flexible, recyclable, lightweight, and when associated to low te...

UV and ozone influence on the conductivity of ZnO thin films.

Gonçalves, Gislayne Elisana; Pimentel, A.; Fortunato, E.; Martins, R.; Queiroz, E. L.; Bianchi, Rodrigo Fernando; Faria, Roberto Mendonça

Complex impedance measurements were used to analyze the influence of ultraviolet and ozone gas on the electronic behaviour of ZnO films grown by rf magnetron sputtering. The data show that UV exposure strongly increases the ac conductivity of the film at very low frequencies, and that after ozone exposure it recovers the original value. At high frequencies, however, UV-light exposure it does not change the cond...

Head-mounted display versus desktop for 3D navigation in virtual reality: A use...

Sousa Santos, B.; Dias, P.; Pimentel, A.; Baggerman, J.-W.; Ferreira, C.; Silva, S.; Madeira, J.

Virtual Reality (VR) has been constantly evolving since its early days, and is now a fundamental technology in different application areas. User evaluation is a crucial step in the design and development of VR systems that do respond to users' needs, as well as for identifying applications that indeed gain from the use of such technology. Yet, there is not much work reported concerning usability evaluation and ...

Study of electrochromic devices incorporating a polymer gel electrolyte component

Gonçalves, A.; Gonçalves, G.; Fortunato, E.; Marques, A.; Pimentel, A.; Martins, R.; Silva, Maria Manuela; Smith, Michael John; Bela, J.

Electrochromic materials have attracted considerable attention during the last two decades as a consequence of their potential application in several different types of optical devices. Examples of these devices include intelligent windows and time labels. In this paper the authors describe results obtained with thin tungsten oxide films produced at room temperature by rf magnetron sputtering under an argon and...

Hematic polyserositis

Oliveira Pedro, Ana J.; Ribeiro, Susana; Alvoeiro, Lurdes; Branco, Rui; Neto, Fernando; Távora, Isabel; Coutinho, João; Pimentel, A.

We present a case of a sixty-two years old retired stevedore male patient with a two years clinical course of hematic serosal effusion (pleural, pericardial and peritoneal). The effusions which did not recur after drainage had 70 to 80% of mesotelial cells. The peritoneal effusion was collected in cystic cavities. The hypothesis of cystic mesothelioma, supported by the inexistence of malignant mesothelial ce...
