Oliveira, Carla Maria; Teixeira, Hugo; Alves, Sandra Maria; Pina, Maria Fátima

Children are in contact with local environments, which may affect respiratory symptoms and allergic sensitization. We aimed to assess the effect of the environment and the walkability surrounding schools on lung function, airway inflammation and autonomic nervous system activity. Data on 701 children from 20 primary schools were analysed. Lung function, airway inflammation and pH from exhaled breath condensate ...

Small ruminant brucellosis (SRB) is a zoonotic disease caused by Brucella melitensis responsible for economic losses from decreased productivity and lost trade in endemic regions. Although an ongoing national official disease control program is implemented, the efforts in eradicating the disease in Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, a region in Northeast of Portugal have not so far been successful, particularly in ...

A higher risk of falls in winter, when compared to summer, has been reported, although climatic factors as risk factors for falls have been little studied. Our aim is to identify the effects of climatic factors (CF) on the spatial-temporal distribution of hospitalization for fall-related injuries in older adults (2000-2010).

Spatial-temporal analysis of forest fires effects on hospitalizations for respi...

Oliveira, Carla Maria; Magalhães, Alexandre; Romano, João; Nossa, P.; Pina, Maria Fátima; Oliveira, Carla Maria

A notable increase in the prevalence of fires has been noticed in the last decades in our country, thereby increasing a wide range of organic fuels, which level of toxicity of particulate can lead to serious health problems. The short-term exposures to fine particulate generated from the fires have been associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Our aim is to identify the effects of forest fire (FF) on ...

Spatial pattern of hospitalizations due to low impact falls in Portugal: explor...

Bessa, Ana Cristina; Alves, Sandra Maria; Pina, Maria Fátima; Alves, Sandra Maria

Low impact falls result from low energy (falling from a chair or tripping on a mat), Female sex (up to 60/70%) and increase age (mean age of 80.3 years ± 8.7) are identified as risk factors falling. The continual increase of the elderly population worldwide poses as a problem to healthcare systems as theoretical there will be more individuals needing health assistance after suffering a fall. Despite extensive r...

The objectives were to analyze one-year survival and mortality predictors in patients with fracture of the proximal femur (low/moderate trauma). A prospective cohort was formed by inviting all patients hospitalized in the Orthopedic Ward of the second largest hospital in Portugal (May 2008-April 2009). Survival was assessed at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months after fracture and related to demographic factors, lifestyle, ...

Survival in the elderly following a proximal femur fracture: one-year follow-up...

Campos, Sónia; Alves, Sandra Maria; Cabral, Abel Trigo; Pina, Maria Fátima

The aim of this study was to determine the one year survival rate after a proximal femur fracture and to investigate the predictors for fatality. All patients that were admitted, with an acute proximal femur fracture caused by a fall of low energy impact from 1 May 2008 - 30 April 2009 in a main portuguese hospital were invited to participate in the study.
