A figura de Geoparque surgiu, na Europa, nos finais dos anos noventa. Actualmente, a maior parte dos Geoparques entretanto criados encontra-se neste continente, apesar do desafio da UNESCO para o estabelecimento de Geoparques em todo o mundo.
