Alterações Climáticas Ameaçam a Saúde das Lagoas dos Açores

Raposeiro, Pedro M.

Understanding the Atlantic influence on climate and vegetation dynamics in west...

Santos, Ricardo N.; Rodrigues, Teresa; Naughton, Filipa; Schefuß, Enno; Oliveira, Dulce; Moreno, João; Raposeiro, Pedro M.; Gil-Romera, Graciela

Predicting the environmental impact of climate change in extremely sensitive areas, like western Iberia, requires an understanding of the long-term interactions between climate and vegetation. Here we present a novel hightemporal resolution multiproxy analysis, including plant-wax n-alkane isotope data, pollen analysis, macrocharcoal identification, chironomid and diatom records of sediments from a mountain lak...

The timing of the deglaciation in the Atlantic Iberian mountains: Insights from...

Hernández, Armand; Sáez, Alberto; Santos, Ricardo N.; Rodrigues, Teresa; Martin‐Puertas, Celia; Gil‐Romera, Graciela; Abbott, Mark; Carballeira, Rafael

Understanding the environmental response to the last glacial termination in regions located in transitional climate zones such as the Atlantic Iberian mountains is crucial to estimate potential changes in regions affected by current glacial melting. We present an 8.5 m-long, solid last deglaciation and Holocene chronostratigraphic record including detailed sediment analysis from Lake Peix˜ao, a pro-glacial lake...

Plastic debris in lakes and reservoirs

Nava, Veronica; Chandra, Sudeep; Aherne, Julian; Alfonso, María B.; Geraldes, Ana Maria; Attermeyer, Katrin; Bao, Roberto; Berger, Stella

Plastic debris is thought to be widespread in freshwater ecosystems globally(1). However, a lack of comprehensive and comparable data makes rigorous assessment of its distribution challenging(2,3). Here we present a standardized cross-national survey that assesses the abundance and type of plastic debris (>250 mu m) in freshwater ecosystems. We sample surface waters of 38 lakes and reservoirs, distributed acros...

Plastic debris in freshwater systems worldwide

Nava, Veronica; Aherne, Julian; Alfonso, María B.; Geraldes, Ana Maria; Attermeyer, Katrin; Bao, Roberto; Bartrons, Mireia; Berger, Stella

Plastic debris is widespread in freshwater ecosystems, but a rigorous assessment of its global distribution has been hindered by a lack of comprehensive and comparable data. We performed the first standardized global survey of lakes to assess the quantity and type of plastics (>250μm). We included 38 lakes located in 23 different countries distributed across five continents, spanning different environmental gra...

To determine the drivers of phytoplankton biomass, we collected standardized morphometric, physical, and biological data in 230 lakes across the Mediterranean, Continental, and Boreal climatic zones of the European continent. Multilinear regression models tested on this snapshot of mostly eutrophic lakes (median total phosphorus [TP] = 0.06 and total nitrogen [TN] = 0.7 mg L-1), and its subsets (2 depth types a...

Macaronesia as a Fruitful Arena for Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology

Florencio, Margarita; Patiño, Jairo; Nogué, Sandra; Traveset, Anna; Borges, Paulo A. V.; Schaefer, Hanno; Amorim, Isabel R.; Arnedo, Miquel A.

Research in Macaronesia has led to substantial advances in ecology, evolution and conservation biology. We review the scientific developments achieved in this region, and outline promising research avenues enhancing conservation. Some of these discoveries indicate that the Macaronesian flora and fauna are composed of rather young lineages, not Tertiary relicts, predominantly of European origin. Macaronesia also...
