No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2000-01-01; The presence of various pathogenic fungi in rather unsuspected hosts and environments has always attracted the attention of the scientific community. Reports on the putative role of animals in fungal infections of humans bear important consequences on public health as well as on the understanding of fun...

The fight against HIV-associated disseminated histoplasmosis in the americas: u...

Nacher, Mathieu; Leitao, Terezinha Silva; Gómez, Beatriz L.; Couppié, Pierre; Adenis, Antoine; Damasceno, Lisandra; Demar, Magalie; Samayoa, Blanca

Disseminated histoplasmosis is a major opportunistic infection of HIV-infected patients, killing thousands in Latin America each year. Yet, it remains a neglected disease that is often confused with tuberculosis, for lack of simple, affordable, and rapid diagnostic tools. There is great heterogeneity in the level of histoplasmosis awareness. The purpose of this report was to describe how the historical “awakeni...

Identification of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in adrenal glands biopsies of t...

Agudelo, Carlos Andrés; Muñoz, Carolina; Ramírez, Alex; Gutierrez, Jonhairo; Velez, Santiago; Perez, Juan Camilo; Velez, Alejandro; Tobon, Angela María

The authors report two cases of adrenal insufficiency secondary to infiltration of the adrenal glands by Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The first patient had been treated for a chronic multifocal form of paracoccidiodomycosis 11 years ago. The diagnosis of the mycosis was done simultaneous with that of the adrenal insufficiency in the second patient. In both patients the diagnosis was done by direct visualizati...

Lopera, Damaris; Aristizabal, Beatriz H.; Restrepo, Angela; Cano, Luz Elena; González, Ángel

In order to determine the role of lysozyme, an antimicrobial peptide belonging to the innate immune system, against the dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, co-cultures of the MH-S murine alveolar macrophages cell line with P. brasiliensis conidia were done; assays to evaluate the effect of physiological and inflammatory concentrations of lysozyme directly on the fungus life cycle were also undertake...

Role of iron in the nitric oxide-mediated fungicidal mechanism of IFN-gamma-act...

Gonzalez, Angel; Restrepo, Angela; Cano, Luz E.

Iron is an essential growth element of virtually all microorganisms and its restriction is one of the mechanisms used by macrophages to control microbial multiplication. Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, an important systemic mycosis in Latin America, is inhibited in its conidia-to-yeast conversion in the absence of iron. We studied the participation of iron in the nitric oxide...

Posaconazole treatment of refractory eumycetoma and chromoblastomycosis

Negroni, Ricardo; Tobón, Angela; Bustamante, Beatriz; Shikanai-Yasuda, Maria Aparecida; Patino, Hernando; Restrepo, Angela

Eumycetoma and chromoblastomycosis are chronic, disfiguring fungal infections of the subcutaneous tissue that rarely resolve spontaneously. Most patients do not achieve sustained long-term benefits from available treatments; therefore, new therapeutic options are needed. We evaluated the efficacy of posaconazole, a new extended-spectrum triazole antifungal agent, in 12 patients with eumycetoma or chromoblastomy...

Activity of two different triazoles in a murine model of paracoccidioidomycosis

Restrepo, Susana; Tabares, Angela M.; Restrepo, Angela

A new orally absorbable triazole (Schering 39304) with a long serum half-life in man (60 hours), was tried in a murine model of progressive paracoccidioidomycosis and compared with itraconazole, another triazole which has proven effective in this mycosis. Only 15% of the infected, untreated mice survived while 53 to 75% of the animals receiving itraconazole survived. Mice treated with Schering 39304 exhibited h...
