Insight into antibiotics removal: exploring the photocatalytic performance of a...

Fernández, L.; Gamallo, M.; González-Gómez, M. A.; Vázquez-Vázquez, C.; Rivas, J.; Pintado, M.; Moreira, M. T.

The purpose of this research was the preparation and photocatalytic evaluation of a novel nanocomposite (NC) based on Fe3O4/ZnO, to eliminate four persistent antibiotics in surface waters: sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, erythromycin and roxithromycin. Prior to the operation of the photocatalytic reactor, the influence of pH (3-9), catalyst concentration (50-800 mg L-1), oxidant dose (0-100 mg L-1) and concentr...

Agricultural reuse of cheese whey wastewater treated by NaOH precipitation for ...

Prazeres, Ana R.; Rivas, J.; Almeida, Adelaide; Carvalho, Fátima; Patanita, Manuel; Dores, José Manuel de Jesus

NaOH precipitation applied to cheese whey wastewater (CWW) has been investigated in the pH range of 8.5-12.5. Optimum conditions were found at pH 11.0. High reductions of chemical oxygen demand-COD (40%), turbidity-T (91%), total suspended solids-TSS (69%), sulphates (93%), phosphorus (53%), total hardness (40%), calcium (50%), magnesium (27%), chlorides (12%), Kjeldahl nitrogen (23%), etc. were achieved. Treat...

Tailored magnetic and magnetoelectric responses of polymer-based composites

Martins, Pedro Libânio Abreu; Kolen'Ko, Y. V.; Rivas, J.; Lanceros-Méndez, S.

The manipulation of electric ordering with applied magnetic fields has been realized on magnetoelectric (ME) materials, however, their ME switching is often accompanied by significant hysteresis and coercivity that represents, for some applications, a severe weakness. To overcome this obstacle, this work focus on the development of a new type of ME polymer nanocomposites that exhibits tailored ME response at ro...
