Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-29T08:42:52Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2003-09-01; Aim. The aim of the present study was to investigate the validity of the Lactate Minimum Test (LMT) for the determination of peakV̇O2 on a cycle ergometer and to determine the submaximal oxygen uptake (V̇O 2) and pulmonary ventilation (VE) responses in an incremental exercise test when it is preceded by...

High-speed machining tool-steel chips as an outstanding raw material for indire...

Santos, R.F.; Farinha, A. R.; Rocha, R.; Batista, C.; Costa Rodrigues, G.; Vieira, M. T.

Sustainable recycling approaches are emerging topics for environmental safety of manufacturing technologies. Chips generated in high–speed machining (HSM) of as-quenched steels have a potential re-use for more sustainable and cost-efficient manufacturing routes, such as powder production from chip milling for additive manufacturing (AM). The objective of this study was to characterise tool-steel chips generated...

Time to get emotional: Determinants of university students’ intention to return...

Simões, F.; Rocca, A.; Rocha, R.; Mateus, C.; Marta, E.; Tosun, J.

The social sustainability of rural areas is affected by the phenomenon of “brain drain” due to younger generations’ outward migration. Our study examines how structural and subjective factors determine the returning intentions of university students over time, before completion of their studies. We conducted a longitudinal, 3-wave survey between 2018 and 2020, involving 349 students (Mean age = 21.89; 63.04% wo...

Bat conservation and zoonotic disease risk: a research agenda to prevent misgui...

Rocha, R.; Aziz, S.A.; Brook, C.E.; Carvalho, W.D.; Cooper-Bohannon, R.

COVID-19 has spread around the globe, with massive impacts on global human health, national economies and conservation activities. In the timely editorial about conservation in the maelstrom of COVID-19, Evans et al. (2020) urged the conservation community to collaborate with other relevant sectors of society in the search for solutions to the challenges posed by the current pandemic, as well as future zoonotic...

Introduced population of ring-necked parakeets Psittacula krameri in Madeira Is...

Rocha, R.; Reino, L.; Sepúlveda, P.; Ribeiro, J.

Alien invasive species are major drivers of ecological change worldwide, being especially detrimental in oceanic islands, where they constitute one of the greatest threats to the survival of native species. Ring-necked parakeets Psittacula krameri (Scopoli, 1769) are popular pets and individuals escaped from captivity have formed multiple self-sustainable populations outside their native range. For over ten yea...

Beyond the prophecy success: how place attachment and future time perspective s...

Simões, F.; Rocha, R.; Mateus, C.

Rural areas are struggling with youth mobility to urban centers. We address this challenge by testing the interplay between objective factors underlying mobility, namely socio-economic status indicators, and subjective factors, specifically Place Attachment (PA) and Future Time Perspective (FTP), and how they connect with the returning intentions of university students with a rural background after their gradua...

Positive state observer for the automatic control of the depth of anesthesia-Cl...

Nogueira, Filipa Nunes; Mendonca, T.; Rocha, R.

The depth of anesthesia (DoA) is a crucial feature in general anesthesia. Nowadays the DoA is usually evaluated by the bispectral index (BIS). According to the surgical procedure, different reference levels for the BIS may be clinically required. This can be achieved by the simultaneous administration of an analgesic (e.g. remifentanil) and an hypnotic (eg propofol). As a contribution to the effort of automatin...

Genomes of Helicobacter pylori prophages

Vale, F.F.; Nunes, A.; Oleastro, M.; Gomes, J.P.; Sampaio, D.; Rocha, R.; Vítor, J.; Engstrand, L.; Pascoe, B.; Berthenet, E.; Sheppard, S.

Nearly 20% of the Helicobacter pylori genomes carry prophages genes. Recently we were able to clearly differentiate four populations of prophages according to geographical origin of host strain. Interestingly we were able to discriminate between Northern Europe and Southern Europe using a phage sequence typing based on 2 prophage genes of H. pylori (integrase and holin) but present in only a minority of strains.

Helicobacter pylori strains from ulcer and non-ulcer differ in binding ability ...

Quintana-Hayashi, M.P.; Rocha, R.; Roxo-Rosa, M.; Oleastro, M.; Linden, S.K.

Background : Adhesion to mucins within the mucus layer and to membrane bound mucins present on the surface epithelial cells is a key step in the interacon of H. pylori and its host. Aim : To invesgate the level and mechanisms of binding of non- ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) strains versus pepc ulcer disease (PUD) strains to human gastric mucins.
