Exploring bio-based alternatives to cyclopentasiloxane: paving the way to promi...

Castro, Mariana; Roque, Catarina; Loureiro, Ana Isabel Sá; Guimarães, Diana Isabel Pereira; Silva, C.; Ribeiro, Artur; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur

Supplementary data associated with this article can be found in the online version at doi:10.1016/j.colsurfa.2024.135915.; In recent years, significant efforts have been made to identify suitable alternatives for silicones commonly used in daily cosmetic products. However, green alternatives have faced challenges in replicating the unique properties of silicone-based formulations, particularly cyclopentasiloxan...

Double-defense barrier design for anti-fouling separation membrane with the bio...

Yang, Xue; Chen, Xinyi; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur; Wang, Hongbo; Su, Jing

Membrane fouling, including the accumulation of bacteria, oil and dyes on the membrane surface, could reduce the permeability and selectivity of the separation membrane. This work proposes a double-defense barrier, integrating the biological catalysis and hydrogel coating on the separation membrane. The first defense barrier was designed by coating polyvinyl alcohol, sodium carboxymethylcellulose and tannic aci...

Biosynthesis of new amphiphilic esters with emulsifying properties for long-ter...

Roque, Catarina; Castro, Mariana; Castro, Tarsila Gabriel; Ribeiro, Artur; Silva, C.; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur; Noro, Jennifer Martins

In this work, several amphiphilic compounds were successfully synthesized via lipase-catalysis: 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyloctanoate, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyldecanoate, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethylpalmitate, (2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyloleate) and (2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)ethyllinoleate). The reactions were carried out using octanoic acid, decanoic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid, as the aliphatic compounds, and...

Tunning antisolvent precipitation for the synthesis of lignin nanoparticles usi...

Mesquita, Ricardo Marchezan Farias de; Schneider, Willian Daniel Hahn; Longo, Vinicius; Baudel, Henrique Macedo; Diebold, Eduardo; Rencoret, Jorge

Available online 1 March 2025; Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) show great potential in UV-protectants, drugs carriers, encapsulation, supercapacitors, and others. This study proposes the development of an optimised LNP synthesis method by antisolvent precipitation, using lignin from persimmon tree pruning waste, green coconut waste, and sugarcane bagasse. The best synthesis conditions were determined evaluating the...

AI, docking, and molecular dynamics to track the binding of structural peptides...

Ferreira, Tiago; Pereira, Francisco; Gonçalves, Filipa; Costa, André da; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur; Castro, Tarsila Gabriel

The present work shows a computational approach to assess the interactions of different nature-inspired peptides with hair keratin models. An updated keratin model was validated, and comparisons with previous models were traced, thereby highlighting the time-evolution of both the model and the in silico methods. Importantly, the computational methodology presented here allows for the study of peptide-protein in...

Solvent-free synthesis of hydrophobic and amphiphilic esters using a chemically...

Roque, Catarina S.; Castro, Mariana de; Castro, Tarsila G.; Silva, C.; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur; Noro, Jennifer Martins

Using lipases to catalyze the synthesis of the most differentiated type of compounds remains one of the major challenges among scientists. Seeking more economic and advantageous catalysts is a current goal of green chemistry. In this work, we demonstrate the potential of a chemically modified form of lipase from Thermomyces lanuginosus (cmLTL) for the synthesis of both hydrophobic (heptyl heptanoate, heptyl oct...

Physicochemical properties of new silicone alternatives unraveled by experiment...

Ferreira, Tiago; Rocha, Diana; Freitas, David Silva; Noro, Jennifer Martins; Castro, Mariana de; Loureiro, Ana Isabel Sá; Silva, Carla

The cosmetic industry has recognized an increasing demand for environmentally sustainable solutions due to the classification of certain commonly used components as bioaccumulative and hazardous. The European Union has implemented restrictions on the utilization of some components, including silicones, which limit their concentration. The present investigation intends to find new solutions for cosmetic formulat...

Cellulose formulations for hair modelling

Carvalho, José; Martins, Madalena; Cavaco-Paulo, Artur

Chemical processes to change the hair shape can lead to damaged hair fibre. Here, we propose benign formulations based on different types of cellulose using imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) and a commercial serum as solvents. Formulations with concentrations at 3% and 0.5% of HEC (Hydroxyethyl cellulose) and CMC (Carboxymethylcellulose) showed the best results after washing, around 10% of curling effect. Images ...

Changing human hair fibre colour and shape from the follicle

Matamá, Maria Teresa Gonçalves Macedo; Costa, Cristiana Filipa Chaves; Fernandes, Bruno; Araújo, Rita; Cruz, Célia F.; Tortosa, Francisco

Introduction: Natural hair curvature and colour are genetically determined human traits, that we inten tionally change by applying thermal and chemical treatments to the fibre. Presently, those cosmetic methodologies act externally and their recurrent use is quite detrimental to hair fibre quality and even to our health. Objectives: This work represents a disruptive concept to modify natural hair colour and cur...
