Exploring social indicators in smallholder food systems: modeling children’s ed...

Thom, Amy E.; Bélières, Jean-François; Conradie, Beatrice; Salgado, Paulo; Vigne, Mathieu; Fangueiro, David

Promoting smallholders’ sustainable development in Africa means addressing agronomic and economic factors but also highly relevant social influences shaping farmers’ production and affecting household well-being. Holistic, integrated analyses can help to meet this need, informing more effective policies and interventions for smallholder farming systems. The authors apply a transdisciplinary, quantitative approa...

Communication and sport: a call to action

Salgado, Paulo

The economic influence of media has dramatically changed the world of sport, leading sports organisations to increase their focus on communication and assets like brands and reputation. The intent for a more strategic communication within the sports industry must consider a broader and more profound reflection of how the world of sports intertwines with communication and its interactive process of creation, sel...

Multi-kalman filter to wind power forecasting

Salgado, Paulo; Igrejas, Getúlio; Afonso, Paulo Alexandre Ferreira

Wind power forecasting methods are important for the safety of wind renewable energy utilization. However, because wind power is weather dependent and, thus, can be variable and intermittent over different time-scales, it’s difficult to build accurate and robust predictive models. In this context, an accurate model is a relevant contribution for a reliable large-scale wind power integration. This paper explores...

Hybrid PSO-cubic spline for autonomous robots optimal trajectory planning

Salgado, Paulo; Igrejas, Getúlio; Afonso, Paulo Alexandre Ferreira

This paper presents a new version of the Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm where the particles are replaced by spline functions. The developed algorithm generates smooth motion trajectories with two times continuously differentiable curvature avoiding obstacles placed in the workspace. It can be used for autonomous robot path planning or transport problems. The spline based trajectory generation gives us co...
