Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (aPDT) is gaining recognition as an effective approach for the photoinactivation of a broad spectrum of microorganisms [1,2]. Due to their apolar behavior, photosensitizers (PS) often have low solubility in aqueous media requiring the use of toxic organic solvents that are incompatible with their application in the field [4]. In this study, the potential of Deep Eutectic Solve...

An efficient access to porphyrin derivatives bearing uracil-alditol moieties at the beta-pyrrolic position was developed. The synthetic strategy involved a hetero Diels-Alder reaction between uracil-alditol based ortho-quinodimethanes using 2-vinyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin as the scaffold. The preliminary evaluation of their photodynamic effectiveness in prostate cancer cells suggests that the adducts 4-...

Comparative photodynamic inactivation of bioluminescent E. coli by pyridinium a...

Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a therapeutic approach in study due to the ability to reduce or completely eliminate the bacterial strains without the development of resistance mechanisms. In this therapeutic methodology the cationic chlorins (Chls) with pyridinium or inverted pyridinium moieties are one of the photosensitizers exploited in our biological approaches. In this context, we synthesized and chara...

New nitroindazole-porphyrin conjugates: synthesis, characterization and antibac...

Eddahmi, Mohammed; Sousa, Vera; Moura, Nuno M. M.; Dias, Cristina J.; Bouissane, Latifa; Faustino, Maria A. F.; Cavaleiro, José A. S.

The synthesis of new porphyrin-indazole hybrids by a Knoevenagel condensation of 2-formyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin and N-methyl-nitroindazolylacetonitrile derivatives is reported. The target compounds were isolated in moderate to good yields (32-57%) and some of the isolated porphyrin-indazole conjugates showed good performance in the generation of singlet oxygen when irradiated with visible light. Their...

An insight on the role of photosensitizer nanocarriers for Photodynamic Therapy

Mesquita, Mariana Q.; Dias, Cristina J.; Gamelas, Sara; Fardilha, Margarida; Neves, Maria G. P. M. S.; Faustino, Maria Amparo F.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a modality of cancer treatment in which tumor cells are destroyed by reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by photosensitizers following its activation with visible or near infrared light. The PDT success is dependent on different factors namely on the efficiency of the photosensitizer deliver and targeting ability. In this review a special attention will be given to the role of s...
