Chromium bioremediation potential of Exiguobacterium acetylicum — a bacterium i...

Carvalho, R. L. D.; Okeke, B. C.; Demarco, C. F.; Pieniz, S.; Cunha, A. G.; Carlos, F. S.; Silva, R. F.; Quadro, M. S.; Ribeiro, A. S.; Pinto, A. P.

Environmental contamination with hazardous compounds like chromium (Cr) poses significant risks to ecosystems and human health. This study investigates the bioremediation potential of rhizobacteria Exiguobacterium acetylicum isolated from the roots of the aquatic macrophyte Hymenachne grumosa, collected from Santa Barbara Stream, in Southern Brazil. Cr-resistant bacteria from the plant were isolated, characteri...

Effect of relative humidity and temperature on the tribology of multilayer micr...

Shabani, M.; Abreu, C. S.; Gomes, J. R.; Silva, R. F.; Oliveira, F. J.

The tribological behavior of tenfold micro/nanocrystalline CVD diamond multilayers is here investigated in self–mated configuration using ball-on-plate reciprocating wear testing. The effects of relative humidity (RH) and temperature (T) on friction and wear coefficients are assessed. The strongest effect of humidity was found on the value of the critical load (no delamination) that triples from 40 N at 10%RH t...

Nucleation, Growth Mechanism, and Controlled Coating of ZnO ALD onto Vertically...

Silva, R. M.; Ferro, M. C.; Araujo, J. R.; Achete, C. A.; Cavel, G.; Silva, R. F.; Pinna, N.

Zinc oxide thin films were deposited on vertically aligned nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) from diethylzinc and water. The study demonstrates that doping CNTs with nitrogen is an effective approach for the \"activation\" of the CNTs surface for the ALD of metal oxides. Conformal ZnO coatings are already obtained after 50 ALD cycles, whereas at lower ALD cycles an island...

Surface modifications on as-grown boron doped CVD diamond films induced by the ...

Neto, M. A.; Pato, G.; Bundaleski, N.; Teodoro, O. M. N. D.; Fernandes, A. J. S.; Oliveira, F. J.; Silva, R. F.

The surface termination of as-grown microcrystalline (MCD) and nanocrystalline (NCD) boron-doped diamond films was assessed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and water contact angle techniques. The diamond coatings were grown on mirror-polished silicon nitride ceramic substrates using the hot-filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) technique. The boron doping source, boron oxide (B2O3) diluted in eth...

Diels–Alder functionalized carbon nanotubes for bone tissue engineering : in vi...

Mata, Diogo; Amaral, M.; Fernandes, A. J. S.; Colaço, B.; Gama, A.; Paiva, M. C.; Gomes, P. S.; Silva, R. F.; Fernandes, M. H.

The risk-benefit balance for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dictates their clinical fate. To take a step forward at this crossroad it is compulsory to modulate the CNT in vivo biocompatibility and biodegradability via e.g. chemical functionalization. CNT membranes were functionalised combining a Diels–Alder cycloaddition reaction to generate cyclohexene (–C6H10) followed by a mild oxidisation to yield carboxylic acid ...
