FAO estimates that in 2030 the poultry meat production could reach 120 million tons, which is a challenge in terms of waste management. Feathers are mainly composed of keratin, an important biomaterial. Using feathers as a source of keratin will minimize the waste generated, while contributing to supply an important material for several industries, such as pharmaceutical and biomedical. The peptides were extrac...
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important pulse crops in the world, cultivated on a wide range of environments. In Mediterranean regions, it is traditionally grown as a spring-sown rainfed crop, very dependent on rainfall. In this situation, supplemental irrigation can improve significantly the crop yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the improvement on chickpea crop yield and wa...
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important pulse crops in the world, cultivated on a wide range of environments. In Mediterranean regions, it is traditionally grown as a spring sown rainfed crop, thus very dependent on rainfall. Supplemental irrigation can sometimes be a strategy to overcome the deficiency in rainfall, especially in very dry years. The objective of this study was to evaluate the...
The yield potential of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), under Mediterranean conditions, is often limited by terminal drought stress due to the irregularity of rainfall and high temperatures during the flowering period. Irrigation, even with small amounts of water, might boost and stabilize yields along the years. Therefore, in order to evaluate the effect of supplemental irrigation and temperature on chickpea gra...
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.), the third most important pulse crop in the world, is a spring crop in the Mediterranean traditional agricultural systems. It is sown during March-April and is extremely affected by long periods of drought during the reproductive phase. As a consequence, there is a need to develop chickpea germplasm with resistance to abiotic stresses mainly drought. . Chickpea requires around 150 ...
Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important pulse crops in the world as a source of protein for human consumption. In Mediterranean regions, chickpea is traditionally grown as a rainfed crop, thus highly dependent on rainfall. In this situation, supplemental irrigation may be applied. The objective of our study was to evaluate the improvement in crop yield and water productivity with supplemental...
Being a leguminous crop chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is important for the establishment of sustainable and economically viable farming systems. Chickpea is grown and consumed across five continents, making this crop more important in international markets than other food legumes. Adaptation trials of 15 accessions of chickpea, 13 from the ICARDA collection and 2 from the Portuguese national catalogue, took pla...
The responses of photosynthetic rate and leaf conductance to leaf temperature were evaluated in two contrasting chickpea genotypes (Elixir and FLIP03-46C) grown under field conditions (Elvas, Portugal). Photosynthetic performance was assayed with leaf temperatures ranging from 24ºC to 40º C under controlled VPD. Technical constraints and physiological implications are discussed.
