Effect of the interaction between elevated carbon dioxide and iron limitation o...

Soares, José C.; Osório, Hugo; Pintado, Manuela; Vasconcelos, Marta W.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) and iron (Fe) availability are important factors affecting plant growth that may impact the proteomic profile of crop plants. In this study, soybean plants treated under Fe-limited (0.5 mM) and Fe-sufficient (20 mM) conditions were grown at ambient (400 μmol mol−1) and eCO2 (800 μmol mol−1) in hydroponic solutions. Elevated CO2 increased biomass from 2.14 to 3.14 g plant−1 and fr...

Short-term exposure to elevated CO2 stimulates growth and metabolic responses t...

Soares, José C.; Pintado, Manuela; Vasconcelos, Marta W.

Elevated CO2 (eCO(2)) increase plant biomass and might lead to nutritional losses. The results showed that eCO(2) under Fe-deficiency stimulates root dry weight from 0.37-0.80 g plant(-1) and shoot dry weight from 0.82-2.10 g plant(-1), without compromising root/shoot ratio. Besides, eCO(2) improved the chlorophyl content of Fe-deficient plants. However, downregulation of photosynthesis, reduction in stomatal c...

Genotypic variation in the response of soybean to elevated CO2

Soares, José C.; Zimmermann, Lars; Santos, Nicolas Zendonadi dos; Muller, Onno; Pintado, Manuela; Vasconcelos, Marta W.

The impact of elevated CO2 (eCO2) on soybean productivity is essential to the global food supply because it is the world's leading source of vegetable proteins. This study aimed to understand the yield responses and nutritional impact under free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) conditions of soybean genotypes. Here we report that grain yield increased by 46.9% and no reduction in harvest index was observed among soybe...

Preserving the nutritional quality of crop plants under a changing climate: imp...

Soares, José C.; Santos, Carla S.; Carvalho, Susana M. P.; Pintado, Maria M.; Vasconcelos, Marta W.

Background: Global climate is changing more rapidly than ever, threatening plant growth and productivity while exerting considerable direct and indirect effects on the quality and quantity of plant nutrients. Scope: This review focuses on the global impact of climate change on the nutritional value of plant foods. It showcases the existing evidence linking the effects of climate change factors on crop nutrition...

Effect of the incorporation of salted additives on probiotic whey cheeses

Madureira, Ana Raquel; Soares, José C.; Pintado, Manuela E.; Gomes, Ana Maria; Freitas, Ana Cristina; Malcata, F. Xavier

The research effort described here has focused on incorporation of Lactobacillus casei, in whey protein matrices, in the presence of selected salty additives. Those matrices were produced via thermal processing of a combination of either ovine or bovine whey (or a mixture thereof) with ovine milk, and were inoculated (at 10%) with L. casei strain LAFTI®L26; salt, salt and herbs, or salt and xanthan were further...

Aqueous extracts of Vaccinium corymbosum as inhibitors of Staphylococcus aureus

Silva, Sara; Costa, Eduardo M.; Costa, Maria Rosário; Pereira, Miguel F.; Pereira, Joana O.; Soares, José C.; Pintado, M. E.

Staphylococcus aureus has been established has one of the most common pathogens causing nosocomial infections worldwide and also playing a role in for several outbreaks related to the consumption of contaminated foodstuffs. More recently, the discovery of methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in raw and processed foods increased the risk factor associated with S. aureus associated foodborne diseases and has le...

Bioactivity of probiotic whey cheese: characterization of the content of peptid...

Madureira, Ana R.; Soares, José C.; Amorim, Maria; Tavares, Tania; Gomes, Ana M.; Pintado, Maria M.; Malcata, F. Xavier

Background Probiotic whey cheeses have been produced for several years. It is recognized that several bacterium-mediated metabolic activities contribute differently to the final sensory and nutritional profiles of dairy products. Hence the metabolic activity of probiotic strains in a whey cheese and their contribution to the bioactivity of such matrices were investigated here, including in particular Bifidobact...

Features and performance of edible films, obtained from whey protein isolate fo...

Ramos, Óscar L.; Silva, Sara I.; Soares, José C.; Fernandes, João C.; Poças, M. Fátima; Pintado, Manuela E.; Malcata, F. Xavier

The goal of this research effort was to assess the efficacy of edible films produced fromwhey protein isolate (WPI) and glycerol, including incorporation of lactic acid (LA) and propionic acid (PRO), chitooligosaccharideswith nominal MW of 3 kDa (COS) and natamycin (NA) as antimicrobial agents. Their features were evaluated in vitro via agar diffusion and viable cell counting, against spoilage microflora often ...

Biodiversity and characterization of Staphylococcus species isolated from a sma...

Soares, José C.; Marques, M. Rosário; Tavaria, Freni K.; Pereira, Joana O.; Xavier Malcata, F.; Pintado, Manuela M.

The level and the diversity of the staphylococcal community occurring in the environment and dairy products of a small manufacturing dairy plant were investigated. Species identification was performed using different molecular methods, viz. Multiplex-PCR, amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA), and sodA gene sequencing. The main species encountered corresponded to Staphylococcus equorum (41 isolat...

Antimicrobial effects of chitosans and chitooligosaccharides, upon Staphylococc...

Fernandes, João C.; Tavaria, Freni K.; Soares, José C.; Ramos, Óscar S.; Monteiro, M. João; Pintado, Manuela E.; Malcata, F. Xavier

The objective of this study was to elucidate the controversial relationship between the molecular weight (MW) of chitosans and their antibacterial activity (upon different inoculum levels, at several concentrations). The influence of food components on the activity was also ascertained, as well as acceptance by a sensory panel. All the compounds tested exhibited antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aur...
