Rheo-NMR velocimetry characterisation of PBLG/m-cresol

Leal, Catarina R.; Feio, Gabriel; Almeida, Pedro L.

NMR spectroscopy was used to characterise the velocity profile in nematic solutions of poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG) in m-cresol during the application of a simple shear-flow at constant shear-rate values. In this study, the rheo-NMR technique was used that allows an insight over the fluid dynamics during the application of a shear flow in the presence of an external magnetic field, in a perpendicular d...

Mochizuki, Luis; Brach, Michael; Almeida, Pedro L.; Vega, Ricardo De La; Garzon, Mauricio; Greve, Julia Maria D'Andrea; Limon, Margarita

This collection shows that physical activity behavior and COVID-19 are related. Active life during the pandemic provided fewer negative psychological states in different populations. Lockdown and social distancing have created conditions to increase stress, which exercising was a positive action for its reduction or prevention.

Crosslinked bacterial cellulose hydrogels for biomedical applications

Almeida, Ana; Saraiva, João N.; Cavaco, Gonçalo; Portela, Raquel; Leal, Catarina R.; Sobral, Rita; Almeida, Pedro L.

The skin, fundamental barrier that protects internal tissues, prevents pathogen invasion, and maintains the body fluid equilibrium, may be compromised upon traumas, such as incisions and burns. The healing process of such wounds is costly and usually hindered by the patient’s physiological conditions, associated diseases, inflammation and external factors, namely bacterial infections. Recently, increasing atten...

Tuning the 1H NMR paramagnetic relaxation enhancement and local order of [Aliqu...

Cordeiro, Rui; Beira, Maria; Cruz, Carlos; Figueirinhas, João; Corvo, Marta C.; Almeida, Pedro L.; Rosatella, Andreia; Mateus Afonso, Carlos Alberto

Understanding the behavior of a chemical compound at a molecular level is fundamental, not only to explain its macroscopic properties, but also to enable the control and optimization of these properties. The present work aims to characterize a set of systems based on the ionic liquids [Aliquat][Cl] and [Aliquat][FeCl4] and on mixtures of these with different concentrations of DMSO by means of H-1 NMR relaxometr...

Polyoxometalate@Periodic mesoporous organosilicas as active materials for oxida...

Ribeiro, Susana; Almeida, Pedro L.; Pires, João; De Castro, Baltazar; Balula, Salete

Novel material catalysts based in the active zinc-substituted polyoxotungstate ([PW11Zn(H2O)(39)](5-), abbreviated as PW11Zn) were efficiently used in the oxidative desulfurization of real and model diesels. These active catalytic center was strategically immobilized in a less hydrophilic periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs), containing ethane-bridge (PMOE) and benzene-bridge (PMOB) walls, functionalized wi...

Designing silica xerogels containing RTIL for CO2 capture and CO2/CH4 separatio...

Dos Santos, Leonardo; Bernard, Franciele L.; Polesso, Barbara B.; Pinto, Ingrid S.; Frankenberg, Claudio C.; Corvo, Marta C.; Almeida, Pedro L.

CO2 separation from natural gas is considered to be a crucial strategy to mitigate global warming problems, meet product specification, pipeline specs and other application specific requirements. Silica xerogels (SX) are considered to be potential materials for CO2 capture due to their high specific surface area. Thus, a series of silica xerogels functionalized with imidazolium, phosphonium, ammonium and pyridi...

Enhancement of CO2/N2 selectivity and CO2 uptake by tuning concentration and ch...

Duczinski, Rafael; Polesso, Barbara B.; Bernard, Franciele L.; Ferrari, Henrique Z.; Almeida, Pedro L.; Corvo, Marta C.; Cabrita, Eurico J

Imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different cation alkyl chain ([i-C5mim] or [C4mim]) and inorganic anions ([Cl−], [Tf2N−], [PF6−] and [DCA−]) were synthesized and immobilized in commercial mesoporous silica. The synthesized supported ILs (SILs) were characterized using NMR, FTIR, TGA, BET, SEM and TEM. CO2 sorption capacity, reusability and CO2/N2 selectivity were assessed by the pressure-decay techniq...

Marine environmental plastic pollution: mitigation by microorganism degradation...

Oliveira, Juliana; Belchior, Afonso; da Silva, Verónica D.; Rotter, Ana; Petrovski, Zeljko; Almeida, Pedro L.; Lourenço; Gaudencio, Susana P.

Plastics are very useful materials and present numerous advantages in the daily life of individuals and society. However, plastics are accumulating in the environment and due to their low biodegradability rate, this problem will persist for centuries. Until recently, oceans were treated as places to dispose of litter, thus the persistent substances are causing serious pollution issues. Plastic and microplastic ...

Antibiotic activity screened by the rheology of S. aureus cultures

Portela, Raquel; Valcovo, Filipe; Almeida, Pedro L.; Sobral, Rita; Leal, Catarina R.

Multidrug resistant bacteria are one of the most serious public health threats nowadays. How bacteria, as a population, react to the presence of antibiotics is of major importance to the outcome of the chosen treatment. In this study we addressed the impact of oxacillin, a β-lactam, the most clinically relevant class of antibiotics, in the viscosity profile of the methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MR...
