Global change demands dynamic landscape management that integrates different strategies (e.g. promoting rewilding or traditional farming practices) to address the impact of climate and land use change. Planning for management strategies individually can lead to severe trade-offs between objectives, high opportunity costs and challenging implementation. Integrated management plans are needed to optimise the comb...

Spectral Library of Plant Species from Montesinho Natural Park in Portugal

Pôças, Isabel; Almeida, Cátia Rodrigues de; Arenas-Castro, Salvador; Campos, João C.; Garcia, Nuno; Alírio, João; Sillero, Neftalí; Teodoro, Ana C.

In this work, we present and describe a spectral library (SL) with 15 vascular plant species from Montesinho Natural Park (MNP), a protected area in Northeast Portugal. We selected species from the vascular plants that are characteristic of the habitats in the MNP, based on their prevalence, and also included one invasive species: Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn, Castanea sativa Mill., Cistus ladanifer L., Crataegu...

Studying changes in temperature is fundamental for understanding its interactions with the environment and biodiversity. However, studies in mountainous areas are few, due to their complex formation and the difficulty of obtaining local data. We analysed changes in temperature over time in Montesinho Natural Park (MNP) (Braganca, Portugal), an important conservation area due to its high level of biodiversity. S...

Increased large and high-intensity wildfires cause large socioeconomic and ecological impacts, which demand improved landscape management approaches in which both ecological and societal dimensions are integrated. Engaging society in fire management requires a better understanding of stakeholder perceptions of wildfires and landscape management. We analyze stakeholder perceptions about wildfire-landscape intera...

The implementation of climate-smart policies to enhance carbon sequestration and reduce emissions is being encouraged worldwide to fight climate change. Afforestation practices and rewilding initiatives are climate-smart examples suggested to tackle these issues. In contrast, fire-smart approaches, by stimulating traditional farmland activities or agroforestry practices, could also assist climate regulation whi...

Integrated management of biodiversity and ecosystem services (ES) in heterogeneous landscapes requires considering the potential trade-offs between conflicting objectives. The UNESCO's Biosphere Reserve zoning scheme is a suitable context to address these trade-offs by considering multiple management zones that aim to minimise conflicts between management objectives. Moreover, in Mediterranean ecosystems, manag...

The increasing presence of anthropogenic contaminants in the environment may constitute a challenge to non-target biota, considering that most contaminants can exert deleterious effects. Salicylic acid (SA) is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which exerts its activity by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). Another class of drugs is that of the diuretics, in which acetazolamide (ACZ) is inclu...

Two new products were created to address the challenge of promoting the nut value chain. The spicy chestnut appetizers involve baking frozen chestnuts with spices to create a warm or room-temperature snack. The salty chestnut flour cookies incorporate chestnuts and spices into a modified recipe for a savoury treat.

Portugal is a leading producer of chestnuts, which are deeply rooted in the country's economy, gastronomy, and cultural heritage. To positively impact the chestnut sector's economic value, a co-creation project was initiated to develop chestnut-based food products that can add value and boost consumption. Two products were proposed: spicy chestnut bits and salty chestnut crackers, both of which received positiv...

The environmental and socio-economic impacts of wildfires are foreseen to increase across southern Europe over the next decades regardless of increasing resources allocated for fire suppression. This study aims to identify fire-smart management strategies that promote wildfire hazard reduction, climate regulation ecosystem service and biodiversity conservation. Here we simulate fire-landscape dynamics, carbon s...
