Design for automation, edge services, and manufacturing – A React Native interf...

Torres, Pedro; Esteves, Arthur; Ribeiro, Fillipe; Barbosa, Flávia

This work is part of the PRODUTECH R3 mobilizing agenda project and provides a comprehensive overview of the concepts of Design-for-Automation (DfA), Design-for-Edge Services (DfES), and Design-for-Manufacturing (DfM), highlighting their importance within the Industry 4.0 paradigm. These principles are crucial for developing smart, efficient, and scalable industrial solutions. As a case study, the paper present...

A systematic review on the IEEE 1451 standards: Current status, challenges, and...

Spencer, Geoffrey; Torres, Pedro; Gonçalves, Gil M.

Given the growth of different manufacturers with diverse hardware/software designs, the growth of transducers functionalities, and rising concerns toward heterogeneity, data security, and trustworthiness, the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society’s Technical Committee 9 on Sensor Technology (IM/ST-TC9-Sensor Technology) supported by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) formalized the...

Unsupervised anomaly detection in industrial machines supported by vibration an...

Torres, Pedro; Spencer, Geoffrey; Esteves, Arthur; Sousa, Fernando; Pereira, Fernando J.G.; Guerreiro, Rui M.L.

The integration of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in industrial environments often faces the lack of labeled data, as well as historical records. This lack of information becomes a problem when implementing predictive maintenance solutions, particularly in monitoring the condition of industrial machines and automatic fault detection. This work addresses this issue in an industrial scenario, through the...

Financial literacy bias: a comparison between students and nonstudents

Sebastião, Helder; Silva, Nuno; Torres, Pedro; Godinho, Pedro

Purpose – This work uses survey data from the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (Comissão de Mercado de Valores Mobiliários – CMVM) to examine financial literacy and literacy bias. The main objective of this study is to shed light on this issue by identifying the individual characteristics that are associated with financial literacy, namely overconfidence and underconfidence, which in turn might help expl...

Promoting advanced medical services in the framework of 3PM: a proof-of-concept...

Regateiro, Fernando J.; Silva, Henriqueta; Lemos, Manuel C.; Moura, Gabriela; Torres, Pedro; Pereira, André Dias; Dias, Luís; Ferreira, Pedro L.

Multidisciplinary team from three universities based in the "Centro" Region of Portugal developed diverse approaches as parts of a project dedicated to enhancing and expanding Predictive, Preventive, and Personalized Medicine (3PM) in the Region. In a sense, outcomes acted as a proof-of-concept, in that they demonstrated the feasibility, but also the relevance of the approaches. The accomplishments comprise def...

Efficient integration of industry 4.0 technologies in mobile industrial and for...

Torres, Pedro; Vilela, Francisco; Spencer, Geoffrey; Neto, Luís

As industries embrace the transformative wave of Industry 4.0, the integration of advanced technologies into mobile industrial and forestry machines becomes pivotal for efficient fleet management. This paper explores the challenges and opportunities associated with the incorporation of Industry 4.0 technologies in Mobile machines, focusing on their mobility and applicability in forestry operations. The study de...

Digital twin environment for Forestry 4.0 application using a CAN Bus architecture

Spencer, Geoffrey; Dionísio, Rogério Pais; Neto, Luis; Torres, Pedro; Gonçalves, Gil

This paper presents a digital twin demonstrator of a forest harvesters and wood processing machines. The demonstrator is a cyber-physical system that allow the emulation and identification of faults that may occur during regular machine operations. The proposed solution includes a CAN Bus communication between several electronic controller units connected to sensors and actuators.

Industrial IoT platforms enabling industry 4.0 digitization towards industry 5.0

Torres, Pedro; Spencer, Geoffrey; Lopes, P.; Santos, Francisco

This research paper explores the evolution of Industrial In- ternet of Things (IIoT) platforms and their pivotal role in the digitiza- tion of Industry 4.0, as well as their contribution to the transition to- wards Industry 5.0. The characteristics, challenges and opportunities of these platforms will be addressed, highlighting their impact on the digital transformation of industrial operations. Two case studie...

Closing Editorial: Advances and future directions in autonomous systems for cyb...

Pinto, Rui; Torres, Pedro; Lohweg, Volker

The rapid evolution of autonomous systems and their integration into cyber–physical Systems (CPS) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has been a critical driver of the fourth industrial revolution, also known as Industry 4.0 [1], along with the transition towards Industry 5.0. These systems enable the real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of industrial processes by combining the power of comp...

Disentangling the complexities of modelling when high social capital contribute...

Quintal, Carlota; Ramos, Luis Moura; Torres, Pedro

The association between social capital and health is under continuous research. Based both on theoretical frameworks and previous empirical studies, the magnitude and sign of this association are ambiguous. Our main goal is to empirically investigate under which conditions is social capital relevant to obtain good or very good self-rated health, while acknowledging that different paths can lead to this outcome....
