Geosynthetics for sustainable cities: 3D numerical models and mechanical damage

Paiva, Lucas; Paula, António Miguel; Lopes, Margarida Pinho; Valente, R.

Geotechnical works play a major role on the infrastructure development. Geosynthetics are the most efficient, cost-effective and environmentally- friendly solution to a variety of geotechnical structures (e.g., roadways, foundations, retaining walls). Thus, improving the design methods of geosynthetics can increase safety and reduce infrastructure costs (GDS goal 9).

Ecophysiological traits of highly mobile large marine predators inferred from n...

Alves, Filipe; Dromby, Morgane; Baptista, Vânia; Ferreira, R.; Correia, A. M.; Weyn, M.; Valente, R.; Froufe, E.; Rosso, M.; Sousa-Pinto, I.; Dinis, A.

Nucleic acid-derived indices such as RNA/DNA ratios have been successfully applied as ecophysiological indicators to assess growth, nutritional condition and health status in marine organisms given that they provide a measure of tissue protein reserves, which is known to vary depending on changes in the environment. Yet, the use of these biochemical indices on highly mobile large predators is scarce. In this st...

Qualitative evaluation of fruits from different Opuntia ficus indica ecotypes/c...

Miguel, M.G.; Gago, C.; Valente, R.; Guerreiro, A.; Antunes, D.; Manhita, Ana; Barrocas Dias, Cristina

Opuntia ficus‐indica fruits have an important nutritional value and show several biological properties. This work studied the fruit physicochemical characteristics of two wild ecotypes (“Green” and “Orange”) and two cultivars (“Rossa” and “Gialla”) from Portugal. The results showed that the largest and heaviest fruits were those from ecotype “Orange,”, whereas the wild ecotype “Green” had fruits with firmer fle...

Special Issue on cellular materials

Duarte, I.; Peixinho, Nuno; Andrade-Campos, A.; Valente, R.

This Special Issue contains a small collection of the papers presented during the second edition of the joint conference on Cellular Materials, together with the International Conference on Dynamic Behaviour of Cellular Materials, and held at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Aveiro, Portugal (September 25 to 27, 2017). Within three days, experts from different countries (Brazil, Colombia,...

A model for the effective engagement of all stakeholders in engineering educati...

Valente, R.; Gabriel, B.; Dias-de-Oliveira, J.; Andrade-Campos, A.; Neto, V.

Methodologies for engineering learning and teaching (MELT) approach aims to enhance the attractiveness of education through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) among young people, while promoting awareness of future careers in these areas. To this end, students’ expectations are considered within university programmes, aiming to an increased engagement in STEM careers. To accomplish these go...

Malária Grave — Um Caso Clínico

Vale, P.; Varandas, L.; Valente, R.; Fernandes, I.; Vasconcelos, C.; Gomes, C.

Vale, M. C.; Macedo, A.; Marques, A.; Barata, D.; Fernandes, I.; Estrada, J.; Ramos, J.; Ventura, L.; Santos, M.; Valente, R.; Vasconcelos, C.
