Enhancing CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 Separation Properties of PES/SAPO-34 Membranes Usi...

Cardoso, Jonathan S.; Lin, Zhi; Brito, Paulo; Gando-Ferreira, Licínio M.

CO2 separation is an important environmental method mainly used in reducing CO2 emissions to mitigate anthropogenic climate change. The use of mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) arrives as a possible answer, combining the high selectivity of inorganic membranes with high permeability of organic membranes. However, the combination of these materials is challenging due to their opposing nature, leading to poor interac...

SAPO-34 nanocrystals were prepared and used as inorganic filler in polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. The influence of preparation conditions on permeation properties of CO2 and N2 gases and CO2/N2 selectivity were studied to achieve the highest separation performance possible for this mixed-matrix membrane. Gas permeation properties of PES/SAPO-34 MMMs with different contents of SAPO-34, PES and initial film th...

The use of ionic liquid [emim][Tf2N] as an additive in polyethersulphone (PES) and nanosized silico-aluminophosphate-34 (SAPO-34) mixed matrix membrane was studied through the incorporation of different amounts of [emim][Tf2N] in the membrane composition, as presented in this work, varying from 10 to 40 wt%. Through gas permeation tests using CO2 andN2, the membrane composition containing 20 wt% [emim][Tf2N] le...

The use of zeolites as fillers in mixed matrix membranes (MMM) in gas separation is a well-studied subject. The difficulties to produce a membrane with high selectivity and low defects in the zeolite/polymer interface are well documented. Many researchers have reported that the functionalization of zeolite surface led to membranes with higher compatibility with zeolite/polymer via using silane groups, amine gro...

A novel triazole bridged cobalt fluorophosphate coordination polymer with the formula {Co5(1,2,4-triazole)2(OH)2(PO3F)4}n has been synthesized. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that the compound comprises of Co5 clusters which ultimately build the whole framework, here all cobalt centers are in octahedral geometry established from continuous shape analysis. All the cobalt centers are in Co(II) oxidation stat...

Towards the sustainable synthesis of microporous and layered titanosilicates: m...

Santos-Vieira, Isabel C. M. S.; Lin, Zhi; Rocha, João

There has been growing awareness of the importance of developing environmentally friendly chemical processes. In this context, the synthesis of materials by mechanical grinding or milling holds much promise. Microporous zeolitic materials are well-known for their importance as catalysts, ion exchangers, and in gas separation and storage. Here, the incorporation of a mechanosynthesis (ball milling) step in the p...

Microporous Framework (Nb, Fe)-Silicate with Much Potential to Remove Rare-Eart...

Lin, Zhi; Tavares, Daniela; Pereira, Eduarda; Rocha, João

Nanoparticles of a new small-pore metal silicate formulated as Na2.9 (Nb1.55 Fe0.45 )Si2 O10  ⋅ xH2 O and exhibiting the structure of previously reported Rb2 (Nb2 O4 )(Si2 O6 ) ⋅ H2 O have been synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions. Replacement of the bulky Rb+ by smaller Na+ ions was accomplished by stabilizing the framework structure via partial occupancy of the Nb5+ sites by Fe3+ ions. Exploratory i...

UV-light assisted synthesis of high silica faujasite-type of zeolites

Ferdov, Stanislav; Marques, Juliana; Tavares, Carlos J.; Lin, Zhi; Mori, Souhei; Tsunoji, Nao

Currently, the direct synthesis of faujasite-type (FAU) zeolites with Si/Al ratios greater than 3 depends on organic or inorganic additives. Here, we report the first additive-free synthesis of faujasite with Si/Al ratios greater than 3 using ultraviolet (UV) light assistance. The obtained zeolite shows excellent catalytic performance comparable to the commercial zeolite Y.

A new quinoline carboxylate-based cobalt (II) metal compound, [Co (HL1)2(H2O)4] (1) (H2L1 = 2-hydroxyquinoline-4-carboxylic acid) has been hydrothermally synthesized, and fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), elemental and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Compound 1 shows high thermal stability up to 300 C. Single-crystal X-ray diffrac...
