Challenges and Solutions for Sustainable Food Systems: The Potential of Home Hy...

de Sousa, R; Bragança, L; da Silva, MV; Oliveira, RS

The global food system is currently facing significant challenges that make it unsustainable and environmentally harmful. These challenges not only threaten food security but also have severe negative impacts on the environment. Efforts have been made to reform agrifood systems and align them with the built environment, but emerging obstacles have revealed the weaknesses in these systems, particularly in less s...

Background
Digital patient-centered interventions may be important tools for improving and promoting social interaction, health, and well-being among older adults. In this regard, we developed a mobile app called DigiAdherence for an older adult population, which consisted of easy-to-access short videos and messages, to improve health-related knowledge among them and ...

Rare Case of Rickettsiosis Caused by Rickettsia Monacensis, Portugal, 2021

de Sousa, R; dos Santos, ML; Cruz, C; Almeida, V; Garrote, AR; Ramirez, F; Seixas, D; Manata, MJ; Maltez, F

We report a case of rickettsiosis caused by Rickettsia monacensis in an immunocompetent 67-year-old man in Portugal who had eschar, erythematous rash, and an attached Ixodes ricinus tick. Seroconversion and eschar biopsy led to confirmed diagnosis by PCR. Physicians should be aware of this rare rickettsiosis, especially in geographic regions with the vector.

Introduction Norovirus outbreaks frequently occur in communities and institutional settings acquiring a particular significance in armed forces where prompt reporting is critical. Here we describe the epidemiological, clinical and laboratorial investigation of a multicentre gastroenteritis outbreak that was detected simultaneously in three Portuguese army units with a common food supplier, Lisbon region, betwee...

Pathogenic Rickettsia in ticks of spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) sold i...

Barradas, PF; Mesquita, JR; Lima, C; Cardoso, L; Alho, AM; Ferreira, P; Amorim, I; de Sousa, R; Gärtner, F

The dissemination of vector arthropods harbouring zoonotic pathogens through the uncontrolled transboundary trade of exotic and pet animals poses an important threat to Public Health. In the present report, we describe the introduction of pathogenic Rickettsia africae and R. aeschlimanni in ticks removed from imported tortoises in Qatar. A total of 21 ticks were collected from pet spur-thighed tortoises (Testud...

Improving preparedness to respond to cross-border hepatitis A outbreaks in the ...

Enkirch, T.; Severi, E.; Vennema, H.; Thornton, L.; Dean, J.; Borg, M.L.; Ciccaglione, A.R.; Bruni, R.; Christova, I.; Ngui, S.L.; Balogun, K.

Sequence-based typing of hepatitis A virus (HAV) is important for outbreak detection, investigation and surveillance. In 2013, sequencing was central to resolving a large European Union (EU)wide outbreak related to frozen berries. However, as the sequenced HAV genome regions were only partly comparable between countries, results were not always conclusive. Aim: The objective was to gather information on HAV sur...

Barradas, PF; de Sousa, R; Vilhena, H; Oliveira, AC; Luz, MF; Granada, S; Cardoso, L; Lopes, AP; Gonçalves, H; Mesquita, JR; Ferreira, P; Amorim, I

A total of 100 domestic cats from Luanda (Angola) were tested for the presence of antibodies against Bartonella henselae and spotted fever group of Rickettsia (SFGR) using indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Molecular screening targeting the riboflavin synthase (ribC) gene for Bartonella and outer membrane protein B (ompB) gene for Rickettsia, using conventional PCR and sequencing was also performed in cat...

Lopes-João, A; Mesquita, JR; de Sousa, R; Oleastro, M; Silva, C; Penha-Gonçalves, C; Nascimento, MSJ

Introduction Gastrointestinal infections are among the most common foodborne and waterborne diseases in military populations, with direct implications in operational efficiency and force readiness. Through the surveillance system of reportable acute gastrointestinal illness in the Portuguese Army, four norovirus outbreaks were identified between October 2015 and October 2017 in mainland Portugal and the Azores ...

Baptista, FM; Rodrigues, AM; Gregório, Maria João; de Sousa, R; Cruz, E; Canhao, H

Background: A good functionality is appointed by the elderly as one of the most important factors for a good quality of life, since it is associated with independency and autonomy. Studies show that elderly with food insecurity have greater limitations in daily living activities (DLA) when compared to food security elderly. Moreover, food insecure elderly are 60% more likely to be diagnosed with depression. We ...

Rickettsial Infection Caused by Accidental Conjunctival Inoculation

Brissos, J; de Sousa, R; Santos, AS; Gouveia, C

The most common transmission route of tick-borne Rickettsia is through tick bite; nevertheless, other transmission routes should also be considered. We report a case of rickettsial infection in a 15-year-old boy caused by accidental contamination of the conjunctiva through the infected fluid of a crushed engorged tick removed from a dog. Right eye pain, conjunctival hyperaemia with mucopurulent exudate, chemosi...
